2026 Toyota Hilux WorkMate

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • WorkMate receives a new exterior developed by Toyota Design Australia, plus upgraded steering and safety systems.

  • Powered by the 150 kW 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine available across the range.

  • Gains a new 12.3-inch multimedia system and a 7.0-inch digital cluster as standard.

Exterior Changes Tailored for Utility

The 2026 Toyota HiLux WorkMate introduces the updated HiLux design theme shaped by Toyota Design Australia. In the press image on page 1, the WorkMate appears alongside other new HiLux grades, its proportions still defined by a simple, upright cabin and a long, functional tray. The grille and bumper now share the more contemporary, layered look that defines the new-generation front fascia, giving even the entry model a clear visual link to the rest of the lineup.

The WorkMate grade is distinguished externally by 17-inch steel wheels, manual-levelling LED headlights, a body-coloured bumper and grille, and electric exterior mirrors. Four exterior colours are available. These elements keep the visual language purposeful rather than ornamental, consistent with the model’s role as the work-focused base.

Double-cab pick-up versions add front and rear mud guards, four tie-down hooks, and a tailgate damper with lift assist—details that show Toyota’s attention to everyday usability.

Drivetrain and Performance Characteristics

The familiar 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine remains the only powertrain for the new HiLux range, delivering 150 kW and either 420 Nm with the manual gearbox or 500 Nm with the six-speed automatic. WorkMate variants are available in both 4x2 and 4x4 layouts, and offered across single cab-chassis, double-cab pick-up, and double-cab chassis configurations.

While the more advanced 48-volt V-Active hybrid support is not offered on WorkMate models, the grade still benefits from the platform-wide improvements Toyota has made: updated electric power steering, revised suspension tuning across the range, and broadened safety functionality.

The WorkMate’s suspension tune is the heavy-duty setup retained for WorkMate and SR models—prioritising payload and towing stability rather than unladen comfort. This keeps the HiLux’s working pedigree intact.

Interior Features and Technology Enhancements

Inside, the HiLux WorkMate adopts the same major cabin update found across the new range. A 12.3-inch touchscreen sits prominently at the centre of the dashboard, bringing wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, embedded satellite navigation, DAB+ radio, natural voice recognition, and the updated multimedia operating system.

A new 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster is standard, replacing the analogue dials used previously. Practicality remains core: manually adjustable seats, fabric upholstery, manual air conditioning, all-weather floor mats, and a urethane steering wheel underline the WorkMate’s utilitarian purpose. Double-cab variants add additional speakers and a second 12-volt port in the rear.

Toyota Safety Sense has been expanded across all grades. WorkMate now includes autonomous emergency braking, active cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane trace assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and road sign assist. These systems are visible in the safety section of page 2, where Toyota outlines the broader upgrade strategy.

Market Positioning and Buyer Context

The WorkMate remains the most affordable HiLux variant, starting from $33,990 for the 4x2 single cab-chassis manual. That entry price positions it clearly for trades, fleets, and buyers who prioritise durability over added comfort. By retaining its heavy-duty suspension, steel wheels, and basic interior while adopting the significant safety and multimedia advances of the 2026 redesign, the WorkMate becomes a more modern tool without moving away from its core purpose.

Its placement at the base of the five-grade structure (WorkMate, SR, SR5, Rogue, Rugged X) gives Toyota flexibility to serve both commercial and recreational markets. The upcoming BEV HiLux, confirmed for 2026, will expand that strategy further.
