Electrification Arrives for Toyota’s Toughest Icon

The 2026 Toyota Hilux BEV Hybrid 48V represents a quiet revolution in one of Toyota’s most enduring nameplates. The Hilux has endured harsh environments like the Arctic tundra and desert dunes for many years, making it a symbol of tenacity. In its ninth generation, Toyota has electrified the pickup with conviction rather than compromise.

The new lineup marks the first time the Hilux will offer a battery-electric version, a 48V hybrid diesel, and continued petrol and diesel options for select markets. Toyota’s multipath approach ensures that drivers across different regions — from rural fleets to urban contractors — can choose the powertrain that fits their needs.


Design: Toughness Refined

The new Hilux follows a “Tough and Agile” design theme. Its reworked proportions give the pickup a stronger stance, emphasized by slimmer headlights and a horizontal bar across the grille bearing the TOYOTA name. On the BEV model, the grille is sealed entirely — an aerodynamic nod to its electric identity — complemented by dedicated alloy wheels.

The cabin borrows inspiration from the new Land Cruiser, with a horizontal center console and a 12.3-inch driver display alongside a large multimedia screen. The BEV version uses a shift-by-wire selector, and Toyota has grouped the off-road controls for convenience. It’s the first Hilux to feature electric power steering, improving precision and reducing kickback on rough terrain.


BEV: Quiet Strength

Toyota’s new Hilux BEV keeps its body-on-frame construction, ensuring it remains capable in punishing conditions. The 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery feeds front and rear electric axles delivering 144 kW combined and torque outputs of 205 Nm (front) and 268.6 Nm (rear).

The estimated WLTP range is 240 km, with a payload of 715 kg and towing capacity of 1,600 kg [Unverified]. It retains a wading depth equal to the diesel model and uses Multi-Terrain Select, adapting brake and torque control for various surfaces. An important feature for off-road use is that the battery is securely housed inside the frame, protected from impact and water damage.


Hybrid 48V: The Balanced Middle Ground

Set to become the volume seller in Europe, the Hilux Hybrid 48V pairs the 2.8-litre diesel engine with a compact 48V lithium-ion battery under the rear seats. The setup delivers smoother starts, stronger response under load, and quieter operation. Toyota claims it maintains a 1-tonne payload and 3,500 kg towing capacity, while the electric motor-generator’s high mounting point preserves the Hilux’s 700 mm wading depth.

Production begins in spring 2026, with the BEV expected to follow later in the year. Together, they reinforce Toyota’s broader electrification roadmap — not replacing tradition, but evolving it.


Looking Ahead

Toyota has also confirmed plans for a hydrogen fuel cell Hilux, due around 2028. For now, the BEV and Hybrid 48V versions underline a clear direction: resilience meets responsibility.

The 2026 Hilux isn’t just an electrified pickup; it’s a continuation of a global legend — one that’s finally ready for a quieter kind of toughness.
