2026 Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V European Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • New ninth-generation Hilux adopts Toyota's Tough x Agile design philosophy.

  • Hybrid 48V system pairs a 2.8-litre diesel engine with a 48V mild-hybrid setup.

  • Redesigned cabin introduces a 12.3-inch multimedia display and improved comfort.

The Toyota Hilux has spent decades building a reputation that few pickups can match. Across Europe and beyond, it's become known as the truck that simply keeps going, whether it's working on a construction site, crossing remote terrain, or serving as everyday transport.

For 2026, Toyota has given the Hilux one of its biggest updates in years. The new ninth-generation model keeps the familiar formula intact, but almost everything around it has evolved. The focus isn't just on durability anymore. Comfort, technology, and efficiency now play a much larger role in the story.

Tough Styling With A More Modern Character

Toyota calls the new design philosophy "Tough x Agile," and the description makes sense when viewed from the front.

Slim headlights stretch across the nose and connect through a central bar carrying prominent TOYOTA lettering. Below, a large hexagonal grille dominates the fascia, while angular detailing around the bumper, wheel arches, and side steps adds a more technical appearance than before.

Although the styling is new, the dimensions remain close to the outgoing model. The familiar Double Cab body style continues across the Hybrid 48V range, preserving the practicality Hilux buyers expect.

New alloy wheel designs also help distinguish the different grades. Higher trims receive lightweight 18-inch wheels, while the range-topping Invincible introduces a black seven-spoke design. Toyota says the wheels are lighter than before and paired with quieter tyre patterns.

A Cabin That Feels Like A Step Forward

Inside, the changes are more noticeable.

The dashboard takes inspiration from the latest Toyota Land Cruiser, creating a stronger visual link between the company's body-on-frame models. A slim horizontal instrument panel and larger centre console give the cabin a cleaner layout, while controls for four-wheel-drive functions are grouped together for easier operation when driving off-road.

Higher-grade models feature a 12.3-inch Toyota Smart Connect display, paired with a configurable digital combimeter. Wireless smartphone connectivity, additional storage areas, a cooled upper glove box, and redesigned seating all contribute to a more refined environment.

Toyota has also paid attention to comfort. Revised seat padding, improved pressure distribution, and upgraded materials are intended to make long journeys less tiring.

Hybrid Power Meets Traditional Capability

Under the bonnet sits Toyota's 2.8-litre diesel engine working alongside a 48V mild-hybrid system.

Output remains at 204 DIN hp and 500 Nm of torque, but the addition of the motor-generator improves fuel efficiency, supports smoother acceleration, and enables quieter stop-start operation. The system stores energy in a compact lithium-ion battery mounted beneath the rear seats.

Toyota has also introduced Electric Power Steering for the first time on a European Hilux. The system improves low-speed manoeuvrability, reduces steering effort, and helps improve fuel economy by drawing power only when assistance is required.

Built To Work On And Off The Road

Capability remains central to the Hilux experience.

Payload exceeds 1,000 kilograms, while towing capacity reaches 3,500 kilograms. Ground clearance stands at 309 mm, and the truck retains its 700 mm wading depth.

New technology supports off-road driving as well. Depending on specification, buyers can access Multi-Terrain Select and Multi-Terrain Monitor systems, allowing the vehicle to adapt to surfaces such as sand, mud, rock, and deep snow while providing a detailed view of the terrain around the vehicle.

The result is a Hilux that feels more sophisticated without moving away from the qualities that made it successful in the first place.
