2026 BMW iX3 NA5 South African Version

The new iX3 is BMW's first Neue Klasse production model, introducing a new design, electronics architecture and Panoramic iDrive.
The iX3 50 xDrive develops 345 kW, offers 679 to 820 km WLTP range and supports peak charging at 400 kW.
South Africa will initially receive the entry level rear wheel drive BMW iX3 40 from the first quarter of 2027.
The 2026 BMW iX3 NA5 South African Version marks a much larger change than the familiar badge might suggest. This is the first production model from BMW's Neue Klasse generation, bringing a new design language, sixth generation electric hardware and an entirely different electronics architecture.
There is one important distinction for South Africa. While the first version entering production is the iX3 50 xDrive, BMW confirms that the South African market will receive the entry level, rear wheel drive iX3 40 from the first quarter of 2027. Detailed specifications for that version have not yet been provided.
Neue Klasse Gives the iX3 a Fresh Identity
BMW describes the exterior as an all new design language intended to visually communicate the technical changes underneath. The supplied material does not provide dimensions, wheel sizes or detailed descriptions of individual exterior elements, so comparisons of its proportions with the previous iX3 remain.
What is clear is that BMW considers the change more substantial than a conventional model replacement. The company says the development jump creates the impression of an entire vehicle generation having been skipped.
Panoramic iDrive Reshapes the Cabin
Inside, BMW Panoramic iDrive becomes a defining part of the digital interface. The system is designed around intuitive operation and keeping information within the driver's field of attention.
Behind that interface is a new electronics and software architecture built around four high performance computers, described by BMW as "superbrains." They coordinate major vehicle functions and form part of the broader Neue Klasse technology package.
Cabin dimensions, luggage capacity and rear passenger measurements are not included in the supplied South African material.
Sixth Generation eDrive Brings 400 kW Charging
The headline numbers apply to the iX3 50 xDrive. Its sixth generation BMW eDrive system produces 345 kW and uses electric all wheel drive. WLTP range is quoted at 679 to 820 kilometres, with combined consumption of 15.1 to 17.9 kWh/100 km. Peak charging capability reaches 400 kW.
BMW also introduces its Heart of Joy drivetrain and driving dynamics management technology, intended to coordinate responses from the electric drivetrain and chassis more closely. New automated driving systems are part of the package as well.
South Africa Gets the Rear Wheel Drive iX3 40
Production takes place at BMW's new Debrecen plant in Hungary. The iX3 is particularly significant because its Neue Klasse technologies will not remain isolated to one electric SUV. BMW plans to introduce them across 40 new models and model updates by the end of 2027.
For South African buyers, the immediate story is therefore the iX3 40. Pricing and detailed local equipment have yet to be supplied, but its confirmed rear wheel drive layout will distinguish it mechanically from the 345 kW iX3 50 xDrive.
