2027 BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase NA5
By Lorenzo Bianchi June 10, 2026
BMW is testing the iX3 Long Wheelbase across multiple regions of China.
Development work includes high altitude roads, urban traffic, and long distance highway driving.
The SUV will be one of the first Neue Klasse based models tailored for Chinese buyers.
BMW Takes iX3 Long Wheelbase Into Real World Conditions
Development of the 2027 BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase is moving into a crucial phase. The company has begun an extensive round of road testing across China, using everything from high altitude routes in Qinghai to congested city streets and long stretches of highway.
The work is part of the final validation process before the model reaches production readiness. Unlike controlled laboratory testing, these evaluations are designed to expose the vehicle to the same conditions many owners will encounter during daily use.
China is a very unique challenge for any electric vehicle. A single trip may involve considerable variation in elevation, temperature, and traffic, adding additional stress to range, efficiency, and thermal management systems.”
High Altitude Testing Still a Priority
One place getting special focus is Qinghai, where the thinner air and steep gradients create a tougher environment for vehicle development.
These courses are being used by engineers to evaluate the energy consumption and system performance of the iX3 Long Wheelbase under added stress. Large swings in temperature between day and night are also being used to fine tune vehicle calibration.
The focus appears to be less about chasing headline numbers and more about ensuring predictable behavior regardless of where the vehicle is driven.
Neue Klasse Technology Heads to China
The upcoming SUV will be among the first BMW models in China built around the company's Neue Klasse architecture.
BMW confirmed that the vehicle uses its latest generation electric drive technology together with updated energy and thermal management systems. Detailed technical specifications were not included in the announcement, though the company describes the model as an important part of its next generation EV rollout.
For BMW, the significance of the iX3 Long Wheelbase extends beyond a single model line. It will serve as one of the earliest demonstrations of how Neue Klasse technology adapts to local market requirements in China.
With testing continuing across a broad range of environments, the final development phase is now focused on refining the details before the electric SUV reaches customers.
