Neue Klasse Design Language Debuts on the BMW iX3
The 2026 BMW iX3 50 xDrive M Sport NA5 arrives as the first production model built on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture, a platform intended to redefine the company’s electric future. The model introduces a new design language and an extensive range of digital and electrical technologies that BMW plans to expand across roughly forty upcoming models and updates by 2027.
Visually, the new iX3 carries familiar BMW Sports Activity Vehicle proportions, though the surfaces are simplified compared with earlier BMW SUVs. The body measures 4,782 mm in length and rides on a 2,897 mm wheelbase, with a two-box silhouette that emphasizes practicality while retaining a muscular stance.
The front end adopts a more upright appearance. Vertically arranged kidney grilles reference historic Neue Klasse models from the 1960s, flanked by slim headlights with vertical daytime running lights. A horizontal lighting graphic runs across the front fascia, reinforcing the vehicle’s width.
The surfaces seem uncluttered and tidy from the side. A drag coefficient of 0.24 is the result of enhanced aerodynamics brought about by large glass sections, flush door handles, and a slightly dropping roofline.
At the rear, tapered shoulders and L-shaped tail lamps create a familiar BMW identity, while a roof spoiler integrated into the upper bodywork completes the SAV’s aerodynamic profile.
Sixth Generation eDrive Powertrain and Range
Under the skin, the BMW iX3 50 xDrive M Sport NA5 introduces the brand’s sixth-generation eDrive system. The all-wheel-drive configuration pairs a rear electrically excited synchronous motor with a compact asynchronous motor at the front axle.
Combined output reaches 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque, allowing the electric SUV to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds while reaching a top speed of 130 mph.
Energy comes from a 108.7 kWh high-voltage battery, enabling a WLTP driving range of up to 500 miles. That figure positions the new iX3 among the longest-range electric vehicles available at launch in the UK market.
Charging performance also moves forward. The 800-volt architecture supports DC charging up to 400 kW, allowing drivers to add roughly 231 miles of range in around ten minutes under optimal conditions.
Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes approximately 21 minutes, while standard AC charging operates at 11 kW.
Digital Architecture and the Heart of Joy System
The Neue Klasse electronics architecture represents a fundamental shift in how BMW structures vehicle software.
Four high-performance computing units – described by BMW as “superbrains” – manage driving dynamics, automated driving, infotainment, and vehicle comfort systems.
One of these systems, called Heart of Joy, coordinates drivetrain, braking, steering, and energy recuperation functions. According to BMW, the system processes information up to ten times faster than conventional control units.
Efficiency improvements follow. Regenerative braking reduces the requirement for traditional friction brakes by managing up to 98% of braking events.
Another highlight of the new platform is BMW Panoramic iDrive, a display system that projects data across the whole width of the windscreen and is supported by a central touchscreen and optional 3D head-up display.
Prioritize Sustainability and Interior Space
The interior of the 2026 BMW iX3 50 xDrive M Sport NA5 emphasizes a driver-centered, uncluttered environment. The cockpit creates a wrap-around layout by flowing across the dashboard and into the doors.
Standard seating uses Econeer upholstery made from recycled PET textiles, reinforcing BMW’s push toward circular manufacturing.
Passenger space benefits from the dedicated electric architecture. Rear legroom increases compared with the previous iX3, while luggage capacity ranges from 520 litres to 1,750 litres with the rear seats folded.
The model will be built at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary, a facility designed to operate without fossil fuels during normal production.
With its combination of long-range electric capability, advanced software architecture, and a clean new design direction, the BMW iX3 50 xDrive M Sport NA5 establishes the technological template for BMW’s next generation of electric vehicles.
