Echoes of Le Mans reconstructs the Porsche 917 using only methods and materials available in the 1970s.
The project maintains a strict commitment to period-correct detailing and endurance racing constraints.

A Time-Bound Design Study
This project proposes the legendary Porsche 917 as if it was newly created in the 1970s with only the material, methods, and construction rationale of the time being followed. Modernization was not aimed at, but rather rebuilding, honoring the ethos and limitations of the period and to venture into new design choice-making through sketching, rendering, and graphic narrative.
Andrea Caibugatti designs the project using a historically feasible mindset. Every choice is sifted through the tools, materials, and constraints known to engineers during that era. There is no stylistic fusion or conceptual conjecture above what would have been present in the early 1970s. The outcome concept car matches the rationale of a Le Mans prototype program being developed at the time.
Materials, Surfaces, and Structure
Bodywork includes raw aluminum finishes that show utilitarian decision-making in racing engineering. Surface transitions and proportions are positioned to reduce resistance and aid cooling, access, and maintenance. Parts such as split cockpit glass, flush lighting assemblies, and functional intakes are molded by requirement and replicability.
The raw aluminum skin shows heat-treated wear, exposed tooling marks, and restrained shaping.
Wheels and tires adhere to recognized standards for the race during the decade.
The wheel fitment and stance of the car are based on realistic suspension geometry.
Environment and Presentation
The car is depicted in a low-light workshop next to another endurance model. The environment features industrial floor, gentle shadows, and cars' tools which help to create the look of a functioning garage. The environment aids in the creation of the illusion of an actual motorsport center and not a design studio or sales room.

Design Process and Intent
The design is developed through hand drawing, computer rendering, and low levels of post-processing. All the graphics, finishes, and environment decisions are aimed at storytelling rather than aesthetic enhancement. The discipline carries over into the lighting, staging, and even the flaws rendered into the aluminum casing.
Caibugatti is consistent in tone throughout the entire presentation. From decisions that surface to visual composition, the project resists overdesign and pushes for reasonable production logic. This consistency lends the car legitimacy as a car that could have been built based on the technical and economic conditions of the time.
Context Within Motorsports Design
Echoes of Le Mans is a study in applied historical thinking. The idea is to see how a progression of the Porsche 917 legacy might have progressed within the actual parameters of the early 1970s. The outcome is both a visual narrative and a case study in design constraint as a creative tool.
