2027 Volvo EX40

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • The EX40 receives redesigned Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights, new front bodywork and an updated rear.

  • A larger 11.2 inch touchscreen introduces Volvo's latest interface and Google Gemini.

  • The electric SUV offers up to 575 km of preliminary WLTP range and gains substantially revised safety sensing hardware.

The 2027 Volvo EX40 arrives with a fairly broad update rather than a single headline change. Volvo has reworked both ends of the compact electric SUV, fitted a larger central screen and replaced much of the sensing hardware used by its active safety systems.

The changes arrive alongside similar updates for the XC40 and EC40. Orders for the new 40 series are already open in selected markets, including Black Edition versions, with production scheduled to begin later in autumn 2026.

Thor's Hammer Lights Give the EX40 a New Face

Up front, new Matrix LED headlights introduce a revised interpretation of Volvo's familiar Thor's Hammer signature. The grille is updated as well, while the front bumper, bonnet and front wings have all been redesigned.

The EX40 retains its upright compact SUV proportions, but those altered panels should make the 2027 model relatively easy to distinguish from the outgoing version

There are changes at the back too. Volvo fits new LED rear lights, an upgraded tailgate and a redesigned rear bumper. Unlike the EC40, which keeps its existing rear treatment, the EX40 therefore receives visible revisions at both ends.

11.2 Inch Display Updates the Cabin

The main cabin change sits in the center of the dashboard. Volvo has installed a larger and sharper 11.2 inch display running its latest user interface. The revised software is intended to place frequently used functions within fewer screen inputs.

Google Gemini is integrated into the 40 series as a next generation AI assistant. Occupants can use conversational language when planning journeys, finding stops or managing messages.

An updated wireless phone charger is also included among the practical changes. Volvo mentions new upholstery and decor options across the range, although the specific Arianne Cardamom leather and Brown Ash combination in the release applies to the XC40.

More Sensors Expand Driver Assistance

A new software and sensor platform brings significant changes behind the bodywork. It uses new front and corner radars, a new forward camera, new rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors and updated parking cameras.

Door Opening Alert can warn occupants about approaching traffic before they open a door. Optional Pilot Assist adds lane change assistance, while the optional 360 degree camera gains a 3D view for parking and low speed manoeuvres.

Electric Range Reaches 575 KM

Volvo quotes the updated EX40 at up to 575 km of preliminary WLTP range on a single charge. Battery capacity, charging speed, motor output, torque and acceleration are not provided in this release, so carrying over specifications from the previous EX40 would be.

Regular over the air updates remain part of the package. In the wider 40 series, the EX40 continues as the conventional SUV shaped electric alternative to the coupe styled EC40, with the combustion and electrified XC40 occupying the other side of the range.
