2027 Volvo EC40

The EC40 gets new Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights, an upgraded grille and redesigned front bodywork.
An 11.2 inch central display brings Volvo's latest interface and Google Gemini AI assistant.

The 2027 Volvo EC40 is being updated alongside the XC40 and EX40, but Volvo has resisted changing one of the electric crossover's more recognisable features. Its sloping rear remains intact. Most of the visible work happens at the front, backed by a larger touchscreen and substantially revised sensing hardware.
Orders for the updated 40 series, including Black Edition models, are open in selected markets from September 10, with production due to start later in autumn 2026. Equipment availability can vary between markets.
New Thor's Hammer Lights Change the Face
The front adopts Volvo's latest interpretation of its Thor's Hammer signature. New Matrix LED headlights use a refined lighting graphic, while the grille, bumper, bonnet and front wings have all been redesigned.
The result should make the EC40 easier to distinguish from the outgoing version without altering its underlying proportions.
Changes at the back are deliberately limited. Volvo specifically notes that the EC40 retains its existing rear design, unlike the XC40 and EX40, which receive new rear lights, tailgates and bumpers. That leaves the EC40's coupe influenced roofline and tail as familiar visual identifiers.
Larger 11.2 Inch Screen Leads Cabin Changes
Inside, an 11.2 inch central touchscreen becomes the main visual update. It is larger and sharper than before and runs Volvo's latest user experience, with fewer screen inputs required to reach frequently used functions.
Google Gemini is integrated into the new system. Drivers can use conversational language to plan journeys, search for stops and manage messages while travelling. An updated wireless phone charger and revised cabin illumination are also part of the broader 40 series changes.
The release mentions new upholstery and decor choices but specifically identifies Arianne Cardamom leather, Brown Ash wood, Black Ash and aluminium in relation to the XC40.
More Sensors Watch the EC40's Surroundings
A new software and sensor platform is arguably the bigger functional change. It includes new front and corner radars, a new front camera, rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras.
Door Opening Alert can warn occupants before opening a door into passing traffic. Optional Pilot Assist gains lane change assistance, while the optional 360 degree camera now provides a 3D view for low speed manoeuvring. Automatic emergency braking and emergency steering are also part of the safety package.

Regular over the air updates remain part of the package, allowing software and features to be added after delivery. For 2027, then, the EC40's changes focus less on reinventing the electric crossover and more on its interface, safety hardware and front end appearance.
