The 2027 Volvo XC40 receives one of its more substantial updates, with Volvo concentrating on the areas owners interact with every day rather than changing the compact SUV's basic formula. The exterior has been cleaned up, the cabin gets a larger central display, and a new sensor platform expands its active safety capability.

The changes are shared to varying degrees with the EX40 and EC40, keeping Volvo's 40 series visually and technologically aligned. Order books have opened in selected markets, with production scheduled to begin later in autumn 2026.

Thor's Hammer Lights Reshape the Front

The most obvious visual change is a new interpretation of Volvo's Thor's Hammer lighting signature. Matrix LED headlights use a finer graphic, sitting alongside an upgraded grille and redesigned front bumper.

Volvo has also changed the bonnet and front wings. Together, these revisions make the front end look different without abandoning the upright, relatively compact proportions that have defined the XC40.

At the opposite end, new LED rear lights are accompanied by an updated tailgate and rear bumper. Volvo also introduces fresh 18, 19 and 20 inch diamond cut wheel designs specifically for the XC40.

Larger Screen Brings Google Gemini

The dashboard's main change is easy to spot. A larger and sharper 11.2 inch central display replaces the previous setup and runs Volvo's latest user interface, designed to reduce the number of screen inputs needed to reach frequently used functions.

Google Gemini is integrated as the next generation AI assistant, allowing occupants to use natural language for tasks including journey planning, finding stops and managing messages.

There are useful smaller changes too. The wireless phone charger has been updated, while buyers can choose new upholstery and decorative finishes. For the first time on the XC40, Arianne Cardamom leather can be paired with Brown Ash wood. Black Ash and aluminium decor are alternative choices, accompanied by revised cabin illumination.

New Sensors Expand the Safety Package

Underneath the visible changes is a new software and sensor platform. Volvo has fitted new front and corner radars, a new forward camera, rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras.

Door Opening Alert can warn occupants about approaching cyclists or other traffic before a door is opened. Optional Pilot Assist now includes lane change assistance, while the optional 360 degree camera gains a 3D view for parking and low speed manoeuvres. Automatic emergency braking and emergency steering remain part of Volvo's collision avoidance approach.

XC40 Continues Alongside Electric EX40

The supplied release does not specify the 2027 Volvo XC40 engine range, outputs, transmissions or fuel economy, so those details remain rather than being carried over from the outgoing model.

Volvo instead uses the update to reinforce the broader 40 series lineup. Buyers wanting a fully electric alternative have the EX40, while the coupe shaped EC40 remains alongside it. Volvo quotes preliminary WLTP ranges of up to 575 km for the EX40 and 584 km for the EC40.

For the XC40 itself, the 2027 changes are concentrated where they matter visually and functionally: a recognisable new face, a more current digital cabin and substantially revised sensing hardware.
