  • Third-generation fuel cell system targets up to 750 km of driving range.

  • Neue Klasse technologies reshape the X5 with a redesigned cabin and advanced digital features.

2027 BMW iX5 Hydrogen Brings Fuel Cell Power to the X5

BMW's next-generation X5 isn't arriving with just one new powertrain. Among petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric versions, the 2027 BMW iX5 Hydrogen stands out as the company's first hydrogen-powered production model. The announcement marks another step in BMW's long-running fuel-cell program while keeping the familiar X5 at the center of its expanding drivetrain lineup.

A familiar SUV with a fresh identity

At first glance, the new X5 remains instantly recognizable, though its styling has clearly evolved. BMW has given the SUV a more upright front end, a larger illuminated kidney grille, and new double-X lighting signatures that appear for the first time on a production BMW. The surfaces look cleaner than before, while the proportions still carry the confident stance expected from an X5.

Along the sides, the new Winglet door handles replace conventional handles, creating uninterrupted body surfaces and electrically assisted door operation. Around the back, slim full-width rear lamps and broader shoulders give the SUV a wider, more planted appearance without dramatically changing its overall shape.

Hydrogen joins the growing X5 family

The biggest talking point is what sits underneath the bodywork. BMW says the 2027 BMW iX5 Hydrogen will become its first hydrogen-powered production vehicle, although it will arrive after the initial launch of the other X5 variants.

Its powertrain combines a third-generation fuel-cell system, a new Hydrogen Flat Storage system, and a high-voltage battery. BMW estimates a driving range of up to 750 km (466 miles), although official WLTP certification has not yet been published because the vehicle remains in development.

Unlike the battery-electric iX5, which uses sixth-generation eDrive technology and an 800-volt electrical architecture, the hydrogen model is designed for drivers who may value rapid refueling alongside long-distance capability. BMW has not released full performance specifications for the hydrogen version at this stage.

Cabin adopts Neue Klasse technology

Inside, the X5 receives one of its most significant updates in years. The dashboard has been simplified, with fewer physical distractions and more emphasis on digital interaction. BMW Panoramic Vision stretches information across the base of the windshield, while the free-cut Central Display and optional Passenger Screen expand the digital experience for both front occupants.

Materials also move in a different direction. Slate trim, glass controls, integrated ambient lighting, and redesigned sports seats create a cabin that feels cleaner and more spacious without abandoning BMW's driver-focused layout.

Positioned for a changing luxury SUV market

BMW is preparing the fifth-generation X5 to support five different powertrain types, making it one of the broadest lineups in the segment. That strategy allows buyers to choose between conventional combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, battery-electric models, and, eventually, hydrogen power.

Production of the new X5 family begins at BMW's Spartanburg plant in the United States, while the 2027 BMW iX5 Hydrogen is scheduled to join the lineup later following the launch of the initial model range.
