2026 BMW X5 M60e G65

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • The X5 M60e G65 pairs a 612 hp plug-in hybrid system with standard BMW xDrive.

  • A redesigned exterior introduces BMW's latest Neue Klasse-inspired styling and lighting.

  • The cabin features BMW Panoramic iDrive, Operating System X, and premium new materials.

2027 BMW X5 M60e G65 Brings More Muscle to BMW's Hybrid SUV

The BMW X5 has never struggled to stand out, but the 2027 BMW X5 M60e G65 feels like more than just another mid-cycle update. There's a stronger sense of purpose this time around. The familiar proportions remain, yet almost every panel has been reworked, the cabin has taken a noticeable leap forward, and the plug-in hybrid system promises the kind of performance buyers now expect from an M Performance badge.

It isn't trying to be flashy for the sake of it. Instead, BMW has refined what was already one of the segment's strongest all-rounders, giving the latest X5 a cleaner look and a much more modern interior while keeping practicality firmly in focus.

Sharper styling without losing the X5 character

From a distance, it's immediately obvious that this is still an X5. Get closer, though, and the changes begin to stand out.

The front end looks wider and more planted thanks to slimmer headlights and a more upright interpretation of BMW's kidney grille. Depending on specification, the grille can also be illuminated, giving the SUV a distinctive appearance after dark. New daytime running light graphics add another layer of identity without feeling overdesigned.

The profile remains reassuringly familiar. Short overhangs, broad shoulders and a long wheelbase continue to give the X5 its balanced proportions, while flush door handles and cleaner surfacing help the body look less busy than before. Larger alloy wheel options fill the arches well, adding just enough visual weight without upsetting the overall design.

Around the rear, the slimmer lighting signature and sculpted tailgate create a cleaner finish. On the M60e, larger air intakes, quad exhaust outlets and subtle aerodynamic details quietly hint that this isn't simply another luxury SUV.

The cabin feels like BMW has listened

The biggest transformation happens once you open the door.

BMW has simplified the dashboard considerably, replacing layers of buttons with a cleaner digital layout built around Panoramic iDrive. It could have felt cold or overly technical, but it doesn't. The layout is easier to understand at a glance, while higher-quality materials, ambient lighting and carefully integrated displays make the cabin feel genuinely premium rather than just technology-heavy.

Passengers haven't been forgotten either. There's generous rear-seat room, plenty of storage, and features such as heated seats, premium audio and multi-zone climate control help make longer journeys more comfortable.

Performance remains a priority

Despite its focus on electrification, the 2027 BMW X5 M60e G65 hasn't forgotten how to be entertaining.

Its plug-in hybrid powertrain combines BMW's turbocharged inline-six engine with an electric motor integrated into the transmission, producing a substantial amount of combined power while also allowing meaningful electric-only driving. Standard xDrive all-wheel drive and adaptive suspension ensure the performance is matched by confident handling, whether the SUV is covering motorway miles or tackling a twisting back road.

That balance has always been one of the X5's biggest strengths. The latest M60e simply pushes it a little further.

A more complete luxury SUV

Luxury performance SUVs have become increasingly competitive, yet the latest X5 doesn't chase trends for the sake of it. Instead, BMW has concentrated on refining the areas owners notice every day—comfort, technology, efficiency and driving confidence.

The result is an SUV that feels more polished than its predecessor without losing the qualities that made the X5 one of BMW's most successful models in the first place.
