2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEV GR Sport Arrives in Australia
Toyota has added a new flagship to its popular midsize SUV lineup with the 2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEV GR Sport, marking the arrival of the brand's first plug-in hybrid RAV4 for the Australian market. It isn't simply another trim level. Along with introducing a new electrified powertrain, Toyota has given the GR Sport its own styling, chassis tuning and cabin upgrades, creating the most performance-focused RAV4 the company has offered locally.
A Sharper Look for the RAV4
The GR Sport immediately stands apart from the rest of the range. A distinctive G Mesh grille dominates the front fascia, while larger air intakes give the SUV a more assertive appearance. Around the back, a wing-style roof spoiler and an additional lower spoiler help distinguish it from the XSE models while also contributing to aerodynamic efficiency.
From the side, the SUV sits on exclusive 20-inch black machined alloy wheels wrapped in low-profile tyres. Red-painted GR brake calipers peek through the spokes, adding another visual reminder that this version has a sportier focus than the standard RAV4.
A Cabin That Feels More Driver Focused
Inside, Toyota has carried the GR theme throughout the cabin without making it feel overdone. Heated sports seats feature larger side bolsters and combine synthetic leather with suede upholstery, finished with red stitching and piping. The same red stitching carries onto the heated three-spoke GR steering wheel, which also includes paddle shifters.
There are thoughtful upgrades beyond the sporty details. A digital rear-view mirror, head-up display, dual wireless phone chargers, 45W USB-C charging ports and a nine-speaker JBL audio system all come standard, making the cabin feel well equipped for both daily commuting and longer trips.
Plug In Hybrid Power Brings More Performance
The biggest story sits beneath the bodywork. The 2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEV GR Sport pairs Toyota's latest 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with front and rear electric motors, producing a combined system output of 227kW. That makes it the most powerful RAV4 Toyota has produced to date.
Energy comes from a water-cooled 22.7kWh lithium-ion battery mounted beneath the rear floor, preserving cabin and cargo space. Owners can recharge the battery in around two and a half hours using an 11kW AC charger or reach 80 percent charge in approximately 28 minutes with compatible 50kW DC fast charging. Toyota also quotes a WLTP electric-only driving range of up to 113km for AWD versions.
Chassis Changes Go Beyond Cosmetic Upgrades
Toyota didn't stop with extra power. The GR Sport receives a wider front and rear track, revised spring and damper tuning, a lateral performance damper, a strengthened rear suspension brace and recalibrated electric power steering. Together, those changes are intended to improve steering feel and give the SUV a more composed character when driven enthusiastically.
