2026 Toyota RAV4 Australian Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • First RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid for the Australian market.

  • Eleven-grade lineup topped by the GR Sport AWD.

  • Upgraded multimedia, safety, and connected tech.

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Australian Version arrives as a full-line overhaul of the country’s favourite SUV, mixing familiar versatility with new electrified depth. Toyota has stretched the formula — more powertrains, broader trim choices, and its first-ever plug-in hybrid for Australian buyers. Prices start at $45,990 for the GX 2WD Hybrid and climb to $66,340 for the GR Sport AWD Plug-in Hybrid flagship.

There’s no revolution here, just careful evolution. The stance remains upright and confident, the silhouette boxy yet contemporary. Each grade adds its own flavour — the GX with modest 17-inch wheels and practical roof rails, the GXL gaining 18s and privacy glass, and the XSE stepping into more athletic territory with gloss-black detailing, 20-inch alloys, and a two-tone roof option. The GR Sport caps it off with a wider track, performance-tuned suspension, and GR-specific styling that feels purposeful rather than flashy.

Subtle Refinement Inside the Cabin

Inside, the RAV4’s cabin feels more mature. The surfaces are cleaner, the materials richer. A 10.5-inch touchscreen dominates the dash on lower trims, while higher models gain a 12.9-inch version — both paired with a crisp 12.3-inch digital cluster. The layout is logical and spacious, the design understated. It’s not luxury for the sake of it; it’s well-judged refinement for an SUV that families actually live with.

Two Hybrid Paths, One Practical Focus

Power comes from two distinct hybrid paths. The familiar 2.5-litre hybrid system carries over, now in its fifth generation, producing 143 kW in both 2WD and AWD forms. It’s efficient, quiet, and likely still the bestseller. But the big story is the plug-in hybrid, the first for Toyota Australia — pairing the same 2.5-litre petrol unit with front and rear electric motors for a combined 227 kW (200 kW in 2WD). A 22.7 kWh lithium-ion battery provides solid electric-only range and supports 50 kW DC and 11 kW AC charging.

Advanced Safety and Connectivity

Every variant benefits from the latest Toyota Safety Sense suite, running on the company’s new Arene software platform. Features include upgraded emergency braking, cross-traffic alerts, and proactive driving assist. The new myToyota Connect app extends functionality beyond the cabin, offering remote access, navigation updates, and over-the-air software upgrades.

A Lineup Built for Everyone

The RAV4’s mission hasn’t changed — it’s still the dependable, all-purpose SUV that built Toyota’s reputation. What’s different now is the depth of choice. From the practical GX to the tech-laden Cruiser and performance-tinged GR Sport, it covers more ground than ever — electrified or otherwise.

In a market where rivals like the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and Mazda CX-60 PHEV are gaining traction, Toyota’s latest RAV4 feels less like a response and more like a quiet assertion: evolution through polish, not reinvention.
