2026 Toyota RAV4 GR Sport US Version
By Lorenzo Bianchi October 23, 2025
The 2026 RAV4 GR Sport is Toyota’s first Gazoo Racing-tuned RAV4 for the U.S. market.
Powered by a 324-hp plug-in hybrid system with standard AWD.
Distinctive GR styling, sport-tuned suspension, and performance tires set it apart from other RAV4 trims.
Performance-Oriented Evolution of a Bestseller
After years of success with its GR-branded performance models, Toyota is extending its motorsport DNA into one of its most successful nameplates — the RAV4 GR Sport. Arriving later this winter for the 2026 model year, it gives the best-selling SUV in America a genuine performance focus without losing its hybrid credentials.
Built on the RAV4 Prime’s plug-in hybrid foundation, the GR Sport produces 324 horsepower from its combination of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and dual electric motors. It delivers both punch and efficiency — enough to launch briskly yet glide silently on electric power for an estimated 48 miles of EV range before the gasoline engine joins in.
Functional Design with Motorsport Character
Even at a glance, the GR Sport sets a different tone. Its Functional Matrix grille, finished in gloss black, is flanked by reshaped intakes and air ducts meant to improve cooling. The body sits 15 millimeters lower than other RAV4s, on 20-inch black alloy wheels fitted with performance-spec summer tires. The stance feels tighter, broader — helped by an extra inch of track width — and the GR badgework is used just enough to remind you this isn’t a typical crossover.
The look is assertive without shouting. Subtle aero lips and a dark roof complete the picture. It’s the kind of design that feels considered — more engineering-driven than marketing-driven.
Chassis Enhancements and Handling Precision
Toyota says this is its most dynamically focused RAV4 yet, and the changes underneath make that believable. The coil springs and dampers have been retuned, while reinforced rear crossmembers and a front performance damper sharpen steering feedback and body control.
The steering itself benefits from Toyota’s Cooperative Steering Driving Force Control, coordinating front-to-rear torque delivery for more predictable cornering. Brake feel has been refined too, using electronically controlled braking that blends regenerative and hydraulic pressure smoothly — crucial in a hybrid that aims to feel natural on the road.
It all adds up to a RAV4 that behaves with a bit more discipline — flatter through corners, steadier under acceleration — without losing the civility expected from a family SUV.
Interior Designed for Purposeful Driving
Inside, the RAV4 GR Sport avoids gimmicks and focuses on tactility. Sport seats trimmed in suede-like Brin Naub® and SofTex® materials add grip and comfort. Red stitching, aluminum pedals, and GR logos across the cabin give subtle contrast to an otherwise understated interior.
Tech-wise, Toyota’s latest 12.3-inch digital cluster and 12.9-inch multimedia screen come standard, running software built on the company’s new Arene platform. Wireless smartphone mirroring, five USB-C ports, and available JBL audio round out the cabin tech suite, while Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 brings the brand’s most advanced driver-assist features.
Refined Hybrid Power and Efficiency
Toyota’s sixth-generation plug-in hybrid system remains at the core. Alongside its healthy 324 hp, the setup uses silicon-carbide power semiconductors to improve efficiency and cooling. The system channels power through an electronically controlled CVT to all four wheels via standard AWD.
With a 37 MPG combined rating (manufacturer estimate) and 7 kW onboard charging, the GR Sport balances everyday usability with genuine performance credentials.
