Lexus Gives The RZ More Substance
The 2026 Lexus RZ 500e Sports Luxury Australian Version feels less like a routine update and more like the car Lexus probably wanted to launch in the first place.
While the exterior changes are subtle, most of the important work happened underneath. Lexus has revised the battery pack, improved charging performance, increased power output and spent more time refining ride quality and cabin isolation.
That matters because the original RZ always looked convincing as a premium EV, but some rivals moved ahead quickly in range, charging speed and overall polish. This update closes part of that gap.
The Sports Luxury variant continues to sit near the top of the Australian range, positioned above the standard Luxury grade and below the newly introduced RZ 550e F Sport.
The Design Still Feels Clean And Distinctive
A few years after its launch, the RZ still has one of the cleaner shapes in the premium EV segment.
The body avoids the oversized creases and exaggerated aero tricks now appearing on many electric SUVs. Lexus instead keeps the surfaces relatively smooth, with a low roofline and long wheelbase helping the proportions feel more balanced than most mid-size crossovers.
It still sits low visually, which helps. Some EV SUVs can look heavy around the cabin area because of their battery packaging, but the RZ manages to avoid that bulky appearance.
The spindle-style front treatment also works better here than on some older Lexus models because it has been integrated into the body rather than treated as a giant grille opening. It feels more natural now.
Australian buyers can choose from seven paint finishes, including the newly added Sonic Selenite colour introduced with the updated lineup.
More Range And Stronger Performance
The biggest improvement comes from the upgraded 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
Lexus says the revised setup increases driving range by 16 per cent, allowing the RZ 500e Sports Luxury to reach a maximum claimed WLTP range of 460 km. That alone makes the car more usable for longer trips, especially in Australian conditions where charging infrastructure can still vary depending on location.
Power also climbs significantly.
The dual-motor all-wheel-drive system now produces a combined 280 kW, which is more than 20 per cent higher than before. Lexus has also revised the DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system to better manage front and rear torque distribution during acceleration and cornering.
Charging speeds improve too. AC charging capacity doubles to 22 kW, reducing full charging time to around 3.5 hours under suitable conditions, while DC fast charging remains capped at 150 kW through a CCS2 connector.
A new battery cooling system has also been added to improve charging consistency and thermal management.
Cabin Comfort Remains The Priority
Inside, Lexus continues focusing more on refinement than screen-heavy theatrics.
The updated RZ benefits from additional body bracing, revised spring and damper tuning, and further measures aimed at reducing cabin noise and vibration. The result should suit buyers looking for a quiet long-distance EV rather than something aggressively sporty.
Lexus Safety System technologies and Connected Services continue across the range, while Australian buyers also receive a three-year Lexus Encore membership package with roadside assistance and ownership benefits included.
At $91,000 before on-road costs, the updated RZ 500e Sports Luxury now feels more competitive against premium electric SUVs from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Genesis than the outgoing version ever did.
