The 2026 Lexus RZ 550e South African Version marks a significant step in the brand’s shift toward full electrification. It is Lexus’ first globally available battery-electric SUV developed from the ground up as an EV, rather than adapted from a combustion platform.
That difference shapes the vehicle more than it first appears. With the platform designed specifically for electric propulsion, engineers were able to rethink weight distribution, chassis rigidity, and packaging. The battery sits low in the structure, contributing to a planted stance and balanced dynamics that suit a premium SUV.
Within the local range, the RZ 550e F SPORT stands as the most performance-oriented version currently offered in South Africa.
Exterior design and aerodynamic details
Seen in the official photos, the RZ reads immediately as a Lexus. The familiar spindle motif remains, but it has evolved into what the brand calls a “spindle body.” Without a traditional grille opening, the front end becomes a sculpted surface that emphasizes width and visual stability.
Proportions play a large role here. The long wheelbase, relatively short overhangs, and smooth body sides give the RZ a composed stance that feels typical of dedicated EV platforms. Surfaces remain clean and controlled, with little unnecessary ornamentation.
The F SPORT specification introduces a more technical edge. Sculpted ducts guide cooling air toward the brake components, while fin-shaped bumper mouldings manage airflow along the sides of the vehicle. A rear spoiler and diffuser element complete the package, improving aerodynamic stability at speed.
None of it feels exaggerated. Lexus has taken a restrained approach, focusing on functional detail rather than visual drama.
Interior shaped around the Tazuna concept
Inside, the RZ adopts Lexus’ Tazuna cockpit philosophy, a layout intended to keep key information and controls naturally within the driver’s field of vision.
The design is calm and deliberate. A dial-type shift-by-wire controller replaces the traditional gear selector, freeing up space around the center console. Ambient lighting introduces layered patterns across the interior surfaces, adding subtle visual depth.
Ultrasuede sport seats with increased lateral support are included on the RZ 550e F SPORT. The performance-oriented vibe is further reinforced by painted brake calipers and aluminum pedals.
A 14-inch Full HD multimedia display serves as the main interface, supported by a 13-speaker Mark Levinson audio system and a head-up display projecting key information directly into the driver’s line of sight. A panoramic roof can switch electronically between transparent and opaque states.
One unusual feature stands out: Lexus’ radiant heating system. Infrared panels warm occupants directly, which the company says improves efficiency while maintaining comfort.
Electric performance and DIRECT4 traction

Battery capacity in the F SPORT model is 76.9 kWh, supported by a water-cooling system designed to maintain consistent performance during high loads or rapid charging.
Charging capability includes a 22 kW onboard charger and battery pre-conditioning technology that prepares the pack before fast charging begins. Under low-temperature conditions, Lexus states a 10–80 percent charge can be completed in roughly 30 minutes.
Position within the premium EV segment
The RZ represents Lexus’ attempt to translate its established luxury values into an all-electric platform.
In South Africa, the RZ 550e F SPORT sits near the top of the range, priced at R1 938 600, with the more extreme RZ 600e F SPORT Performance expected to follow later as a halo model.
Globally, the RZ enters a growing field of premium electric SUVs that includes the Audi Q8 e-tron, BMW iX, and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV. Lexus appears to take a slightly different approach. Rather than chasing outright performance figures, the emphasis remains on refinement, craftsmanship, and quiet composure.
For a brand long associated with hybrid technology, the RZ suggests how Lexus intends to approach the next phase of electrification.
