Lexus Gives The RZ A Significant Mid-Cycle Upgrade
The 2026 Lexus RZ 500e Luxury Australian Version arrives with a far more comprehensive update than a typical yearly refresh. Lexus has revised the battery system, improved charging capability, increased power output and refined the overall driving experience as it expands the RZ lineup locally.
Positioned as the entry point into the upgraded RZ range, the RZ 500e Luxury now shares several improvements developed alongside the new flagship RZ 550e F Sport. The result is an electric SUV that feels more polished and substantially more capable than the earlier version.
Lexus says the changes are aimed at reinforcing the brand’s “Lexus Driving Signature,” focusing on refinement, responsiveness and day-to-day usability rather than outright aggression.
Cleaner Surfacing And Familiar Lexus Proportions
Visually, the RZ 500e Luxury retains the same low-slung crossover silhouette introduced with the original model, though the cleaner detailing and revised wheel designs continue to separate it from more conventional midsize EV SUVs.
The proportions remain one of the RZ’s stronger points. The cab sits relatively low compared to rivals, helping avoid the tall, upright stance that still affects many electric crossovers. Short overhangs and a wide track give it a planted appearance, while the smooth body surfacing helps reinforce its aerodynamic focus.
Australian buyers will be able to choose from seven exterior colours, including the newly introduced Sonic Selenite finish.
The overall look remains understated rather than theatrical. That restraint probably suits the Lexus customer base better than oversized aerodynamic detailing or excessive lighting elements.
More Power And A Larger Battery Pack
The biggest changes sit underneath the bodywork.
The updated RZ 500e Luxury now adopts a larger 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, replacing the smaller unit used previously. Lexus says the upgrade increases WLTP driving range by 16 per cent, reaching a maximum claimed figure of 460 km.
Output has also increased significantly. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup now delivers a combined 280 kW, representing more than a 20 per cent improvement over the earlier RZ.
Charging capability improves as well. AC charging capacity doubles to 22 kW, allowing a full charge in around 3.5 hours under suitable conditions, while DC fast charging remains available at up to 150 kW through a CCS2 connection.
Lexus has also introduced a new battery cooling system designed to improve charging consistency, long-term battery performance and thermal management.
Cabin Refinement Remains A Priority
Inside, the RZ 500e Luxury continues to prioritise quietness and comfort over overt sportiness.
Lexus says additional body bracing, revised suspension tuning and updated spring and damper settings improve both ride quality and handling response. Measures to reduce noise, vibration and harshness have also been expanded to create a more refined cabin environment.
The latest Lexus Safety System and Connected Services technologies are fitted across the range, while Australian buyers also receive a three-year Lexus Encore membership package that includes roadside assistance and service-related benefits.
Priced from $84,500 before on-road costs in Australia, the updated RZ 500e Luxury now enters a more competitive position against premium electric SUVs from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Genesis.
