2026 Kia Stonic Baseline European Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Baseline Stonic prioritises value, packaging, and usability over visual drama.

  • Proven 1.0-litre petrol power remains focused on efficiency and low running costs.

  • Positioned as an accessible entry point into Kia’s compact SUV range.

A deliberate entry point in the B-SUV range

The 2026 Kia Stonic Baseline does not try to reinvent the small SUV. Instead, it reinforces why the Stonic continues to matter in one of Europe’s most competitive segments. This is the entry-level expression of Kia’s compact crossover, aimed at buyers who want SUV proportions and modern safety without the visual or financial escalation of higher trims.

In that sense, the Baseline version plays a critical role. It anchors the range, offering a straightforward specification that focuses on everyday functionality rather than embellishment.

Exterior design led by proportion rather than ornament

Visually, the Stonic Baseline relies on its underlying proportions. The body sits higher than a conventional supermini, with a 42 mm increase in ground clearance over the related Rio, giving it the upright stance buyers expect from an SUV-shaped car.

Design elements are restrained. Without using aggressive surfacing, the exterior is defined by the clean character lines, sharp headlamp shapes, and slim tiger-nose grille. Starting at 16 inches, the car's practical positioning is reinforced while ride comfort and efficiency are prioritized.

From the side, the longer rear overhang compared with the Rio subtly signals improved interior packaging. At the rear, the design remains compact and tidy, prioritising visibility and functionality over flair.

Cabin layout built around clarity and space

Inside, the Baseline Stonic reflects Kia’s long-standing approach to interior usability. The dashboard adopts a horizontal layout centred on an 8-inch touchscreen, which is standard across the range and integrates navigation and Kia Connect services.

Materials are simple but well assembled. Black cloth upholstery, clearly marked physical controls, and a logical driving position define the cabin. The emphasis is on ease of use, not novelty. Storage solutions are well considered, and rear-seat space remains competitive for the class, supported by a 352-litre boot.

The elevated seating position contributes to outward visibility, one of the reasons many buyers migrate from hatchbacks into this segment.

Proven petrol power for everyday driving

Power for the 2026 Kia Stonic Baseline comes from Kia’s 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 98 bhp, paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

Performance is measured rather than brisk, but the emphasis is on smooth response and efficiency. The engine’s character suits urban and suburban driving, with stop-start technology standard to reduce fuel use in traffic. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is available in the wider range, though baseline specifications remain manual-focused.

Safety and positioning in context

Despite its entry-level status, the Stonic Baseline includes a full suite of driver assistance features. In keeping with Kia's larger safety strategy, standard features include Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Warning, and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
