Designing a Future Polestar Could Build

Now and then, there's a design study that makes you pause scrolling. The Polestar Astaios, penned by Choi Hyun Wu, is one such. It's relaxed and confident — a design so fluid that it would be impossible to accuse it of not being born in Polestar's in-house design studio. The idea is quiet but powerful: instead of hiding the battery, place it where it is visually and intellectually comprehensible and center it visually.

Confidence in Restraint - Like a True Polestar

Astaios does not require theatrics. There are no huge wings or enormous vents. Its power is proportion and moderation.
The top is low, the fenders swell up by nature, and the line flows on undisturbed. It possesses that same demure strength characteristic of all excellent Polestar design, where performance is expressed in calm rather than scream.


Astaios also looks to electric endurance racing at Le Mans, imagining a future where quiet takes the place of scream and efficiency the place of theatre.
It's a glimpse into how an electric Polestar could fight at the world's toughest circuit without compromising its Scandinavian understatement.

The Stone and the Fabric

Behind the project is a poetic ideal. Choi envisioned a car resting upon a stone wrapped in fabric.
The fabric represents the body, light and airy. The stone represents the battery, dense and terrestrial.

All but the most advanced electric cars conceal their batteries in layers of bodywork. Astaios places it in context.
The lower black section indicates where the battery is located and incorporates it into the story.
The shape develops from that central bulk rather than avoiding it.

From First Line to Final Form

The sketches reveal a designer in control. Early sketches take grip and direction much earlier than any detail emerges.
Broad shoulders, scooped canopy, and sturdy underpinning define the nature of the car.
When the idea evolves from sketch to rendering, proportions are not altered.
All the curves are smooth and deliberate, the result of a designer who understands that at times less is more.

Calm Surfaces, Strong Structure

Astaios replaces aggression with dignity. The upper part assumes the form of one piece of tight metal stretched over structure, and the darker lower part grounds it visually.
From the top, the car is a ribbon of shape stroked across a stone foundation.
The canopy assumes the shape of a single spine that recedes the eye, giving the design unity and direction.

Air That Follows Logic

Aerodynamics are handled with understated confidence.
Air moves gracefully along the body through gentle transitions rather than dramatic inlets.
The front, roof, and tail manage airflow naturally without cutting the shape apart.


It looks functional because it is. The result is efficiency that feels effortless — exactly what you’d expect from a vision of future endurance racing.

Proportion as Emotion

All good race cars start with attitude, and Astaios has it instinctively.
The glasshouse sits on the shoulders, the wheels sit exactly in their arches, and the weight exactly where it is meant to be.
It even looks as if it is about to move when parked. That balance is what makes it believable, and that believability is what makes it aesthetically pleasing.

Discovering Emotion in Quietness

Designing for electric racing is to discover new ways to express emotion without sound or vibration.
Astaios accomplishes that by making the power source symbolic of power
The battery is visible and unapologetic. It defines the car's personality and gives it presence.
The styling communicates in proportion and silence rather than in volume or bravado.

A Young Designer with a Car Design Veteran's Mind

As a graduation project, Astaios is unusually calm in its delivery.
It isn’t trying to prove anything. Instead, it’s measured, thoughtful, and confident in its purpose.
Choi Hyun Wu shows maturity in knowing when to stop and let the idea settle.
The design speaks for itself from early sketch to completed rendering, never losing its sense of direction or clarity.

Blends Easily With the Polestar Ethos

Every element of Astaios aligns with Polestar’s language of purity and control. It carries the same sense of proportion and quiet confidence seen in the brand’s production cars and concept work. The project feels like a natural extension of Polestar’s design philosophy, reinterpreted through the lens of electric endurance racing.
