2028 Afeela Prototype 2026

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • The Afeela Prototype 2026 made its public debut at CES 2026.

  • It extends the Afeela concept with a stronger focus on space and accessibility.

  • Sony Honda Mobility confirms a US production model is planned from 2028.

A calm evolution rather than a clean break

The 2028 Afeela Prototype 2026, revealed on stage at CES 2026, looks immediately familiar. That is by design. Sony Honda Mobility has not tried to reinvent the Afeela form, but to stretch it. The surfaces remain smooth and restrained, with minimal ornamentation and an almost architectural simplicity.

From the official imagery, the prototype appears slightly more upright than Afeela 1, hinting at a shift in priorities. The stance feels composed rather than aggressive, and the proportions suggest easier access and greater interior flexibility. Nothing here chases drama. Instead, the design seems comfortable stepping back, allowing the vehicle’s purpose to speak quietly.

Space and accessibility move to the foreground

Sony Honda Mobility positions the Afeela Prototype 2026 as a vehicle designed to deliver “joy and value to a broader range of users.” That phrasing is reflected in how the prototype is framed. This is not a performance-led reveal, nor a styling exercise. The emphasis is on space and how it can be used.

While interior specifications are not detailed, the prototype is described as offering greater spatial flexibility and accessibility than Afeela 1. The implication is clear. This is a car conceived around shared use, comfort, and adaptability, reinforcing the brand’s idea of the vehicle as a place to spend time rather than a machine defined by driving inputs alone.

Software and AI remain the backbone

As with Afeela 1, the Prototype 2026 is rooted in a software-first approach. AFEELA Intelligent Drive continues to form the foundation of its driver assistance strategy. At present, the system operates at Level 2+ capability, supporting driving tasks while reducing workload. Sony Honda Mobility states its long-term aim is to evolve this technology toward Level 4–equivalent functionality.

Interaction is anchored by the AFEELA Personal Agent, a conversational AI powered by Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service. The goal is natural dialogue and personalised engagement, positioning the vehicle as responsive and adaptive rather than static.

A clear signal of what comes next

Importantly, the Afeela Prototype 2026 is not presented as a distant concept. Sony Honda Mobility confirms that a production model based on this prototype is planned for the US market as early as 2028. That places it firmly on the brand’s roadmap rather than in speculative territory.

This follows the rollout plan for Afeela 1, which is scheduled to begin customer deliveries in California within 2026, expand to Arizona in 2027, and reach Japan in the first half of 2027. The Prototype 2026 therefore acts as a preview of how the Afeela lineup may broaden in both form and intent.
