2027 Afeela 1

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • AFEELA 1 is confirmed as Sony Honda Mobility’s first production vehicle.

  • Customer deliveries in California are scheduled to begin in 2026.

  • The car is positioned as a software-defined mobility space rather than a traditional performance EV.

Calm surfaces and a deliberately neutral stance

The 2027 AFEELA 1, presented in pre-production form at CES 2026, looks exactly like a car designed to avoid distraction. Its exterior is defined by smooth surfaces and soft transitions, with little interest in sharp creases or visual drama. From the official images, the stance reads low and stable, with proportions that favour interior space and composure over aggression.

There is a sense of restraint throughout the design. Nothing appears exaggerated, and nothing appears hurried. The AFEELA 1 looks less like a statement car and more like a carefully shaped object, intended to fade into the background so that attention can move elsewhere.

A cabin conceived as a digital environment

That “elsewhere” is the interior. Sony Honda Mobility frames AFEELA 1 as a “Creative Entertainment Space,” and the cabin reflects that ambition. Displays are a central design element, arranged to support information, entertainment, and interaction rather than simply driving instrumentation. Audio is treated as part of the architecture, with the sound system developed to support immersive content rather than background noise.

At the centre of the experience is the AFEELA Personal Agent, a conversational AI powered by Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service. It is designed to enable natural dialogue and personalised interaction, positioning the car as something that responds to its occupants rather than simply obeying commands.

Driver assistance as a long-term platform

AFEELA 1 is equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems grouped under the name AFEELA Intelligent Drive. At launch, this operates at Level 2+ capability, supporting driving from departure to destination while reducing driver workload. Sony Honda Mobility is explicit that this is only a starting point, with the system designed to evolve toward Level 4–equivalent functionality over time.

The emphasis is on progression rather than promises. AFEELA Intelligent Drive is presented as a platform that grows through software and AI development, gradually shifting the in-car experience from driving-focused to time-focused.

From prototype to production planning

Behind the scenes, AFEELA 1 has already crossed several practical milestones. Trial production runs were completed in fall 2025 at Honda’s East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio, and those pre-production vehicles were shown publicly at CES 2026.

Sony Honda Mobility plans to open AFEELA Studio and Delivery Hubs in Torrance and Fremont, California, combining showroom and delivery functions. Early reservation holders will be offered an experiential program, with demo drives scheduled for later this year. Deliveries in California are set to begin within 2026, followed by expansion to Arizona in 2027 and Japan in the first half of 2027.

Positioning beyond traditional EV metrics

AFEELA 1 avoids conventional performance claims entirely. There are no acceleration figures or range headlines in this reveal, and that absence feels intentional. The car is positioned as a long-term software and experience platform, shaped by partnerships across technology, entertainment, and creation.

For Sony Honda Mobility, the 2027 AFEELA 1 is not a dramatic debut but a careful arrival. It reflects a belief that the future of electric vehicles will be defined less by numbers and more by how intelligently, and comfortably, people spend their time inside them.
