2027 Volvo XC90

The 2027 XC90 plug in hybrid offers up to 160 km of preliminary WLTP electric range on a single charge.
Electric range is more than 2.5 times higher than the existing plug in hybrid, using a larger floor integrated battery and stronger electric motor.
The seven seat XC90 retains its Scandinavian focused cabin and now incorporates Google Gemini.
The 2027 Volvo XC90 is getting a long range plug in hybrid option, extending electric driving capability without replacing the petrol engine that remains available for longer journeys. Its headline figure is up to 160 kilometres on battery power under preliminary WLTP testing.
That represents a sizeable change for Volvo's large SUV. Electric range is now more than two and a half times that of the existing plug in hybrid variants, bringing the XC90 closer to an EV for routine daily use while retaining combustion power for longer distances.
Familiar XC90 Design Carries Forward
Unlike the XC60 announced alongside it, the XC90 does not receive a newly detailed exterior redesign in this release. Volvo instead says the seven seater builds on its recent technology and design updates.
Its familiar upright SUV proportions continue to support three-row packaging, keeping the XC90 positioned as the larger family-oriented model alongside the midsize XC60.
Seven Seat Cabin Keeps Scandinavian Theme
Inside, Volvo continues to emphasize natural light, premium materials and smooth wood decor. The cabin remains configured for seven occupants, maintaining the XC90's role as the larger family SUV in Volvo's range.
An optional Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system is available, while Google Gemini now joins the XC90's technology package. The AI assistant is also being introduced to the XC60 and supports more natural spoken interaction with the vehicle.
Regular over the air software updates will continue for both SUVs.
Larger Battery Extends Electric Driving
The major mechanical development is the long range plug in hybrid system. A larger capacity battery is integrated into the floor and works with a more powerful electric motor. When battery power is insufficient or longer distances are required, the petrol engine takes over.
The confirmed 160 km preliminary WLTP electric range is the more significant number. It potentially allows commuting, school runs and other routine journeys to be completed electrically while retaining the flexibility of a plug in hybrid for longer trips.
Long Range Hybrid Extends XC90's Role
Volvo sees these longer-range hybrids as part of its transition toward full electrification rather than short-term additions. The XC90 also remains available as a mild hybrid, giving buyers another combustion-assisted option.
Order books for the new XC90, including the Black Edition, are open in selected markets, with production scheduled to begin later in autumn 2026.
