2027 Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI

The all-electric ID. Polo GTI produces 226 PS and reaches 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.
Volkswagen equips the compact EV with a standard electronic front differential lock and adaptive DCC suspension.
The 52 kWh battery delivers up to 424 km of WLTP range and charges from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 24 minutes.
A GTI Formula Reworked For The Electric Era
The 2027 Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI marks a significant shift for the GTI badge. Nearly 50 years after the original Golf GTI debuted, Volkswagen has now attached those three letters to a fully electric hatchback for the first time.
Underneath the familiar GTI cues sits Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform, packaging a front-mounted electric motor producing 166 kW, or 226 PS, alongside 290 Nm of torque. The layout matters because Volkswagen deliberately kept the GTI formula intact. Power still goes exclusively to the front wheels, and an electronically controlled front differential lock comes standard.
Performance figures suggest this will be more than a styling exercise. Volkswagen claims a 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 175 km/h, putting the ID. Polo GTI squarely into hot hatch territory.
Familiar GTI Design Cues With A Sharper EV Identity
Visually, the ID. Polo GTI avoids exaggerated EV styling. The proportions remain compact and upright, with short overhangs and a planted stance helped by standard 19-inch alloy wheels.
The traditional red GTI accent line continues across the nose, now integrated alongside an illuminated Volkswagen badge and IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights. Lower down, the front bumper adopts the familiar honeycomb intake pattern associated with modern GTI models, while vertical red detailing references motorsport tow hooks.
The side profile retains Volkswagen’s signature C-pillar treatment inspired by the original Golf. At the rear, the split roof spoiler and illuminated LED taillight graphics give the compact hatch a more technical appearance without losing the restrained GTI character.
Even without the badge, it still reads like a GTI. That restraint matters.
Retro Themes And More Cabin Space
Inside, Volkswagen mixes traditional GTI references with a thoroughly digital layout. Red stitching, tartan-inspired seat fabric, and a red 12 o’clock steering wheel marker immediately link the ID. Polo GTI to earlier generations.
The dashboard itself is dominated by a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit and a 12.9-inch infotainment display. Volkswagen also includes retro display themes that mimic the graphics of the Mk1 Golf GTI, including cassette-style music visuals inside the infotainment system.
Packaging benefits from the EV architecture are noticeable. Volkswagen says the cabin offers 19 mm more interior space than the outgoing combustion-powered Polo GTI, while luggage capacity rises to 441 litres. Fold the rear seats down, and total cargo space expands to 1,240 litres.
That practicality extends further with a towing capacity of up to 1.2 tonnes and available bicycle carrier support.
Chassis Hardware Designed Around Driver Engagement
Volkswagen appears determined to convince traditional GTI buyers that the electric transition does not automatically mean numb driving dynamics.
The ID. Polo GTI receives adaptive DCC suspension, progressive steering, and a dedicated GTI drive mode as standard. Activating the mode sharpens steering, throttle response, chassis calibration, and even changes the cockpit graphics.
The 52 kWh battery supports DC charging speeds up to 105 kW, allowing a 10-to-80 percent recharge in approximately 24 minutes under ideal conditions.
Volkswagen positions the ID. Polo GTI as both a performance hatch and an everyday EV. Whether longtime GTI buyers accept the lack of combustion noise remains another question entirely.
