Volkswagen has pulled the wraps off the second-generation 2027 Atlas Cross Sport, and the changes go well beyond a styling refresh. New sheet metal, a reworked cabin and the most powerful engine ever fitted to the model all arrive together, seven years after the Cross Sport first went on sale in 2020. More than 220,000 have sold in the U.S. since then, and Volkswagen is clearly aiming to keep that momentum going with a design that leans harder into the coupe-SUV format than before.

A Coupe-Like Shape With a Bolder Face

Up front, double-stacked LED headlights sit above a masked upper grille, with double lightlines and an illuminated VW badge available on every trim above the base. Designer William Lee points to the low cabin and short rear overhang as what gives the Cross Sport its sporty stance, and the body-color trim pushes the look further upmarket than a typical midsize SUV. Around back, the tailgate now sits flush with the rear bumper, and a cross-body taillight design mirrors the front's lighting signature, complete with standard dynamic turn signals that animate on approach and departure.

Shorter and Lower Than the Standard Atlas

Compared with the three-row 2027 Atlas, the Cross Sport is 5.4 inches shorter overall at 195.6 inches and sits 2.1 inches lower, a byproduct of its raked, coupe-like rear pillars. A sharp theme line runs along the upper body sides, reinforcing the fenders and giving the profile more visual solidity. New 20- and 21-inch wheels are available on every trim but the base model, which rides on 18-inch rims, and the lineup adds Dark Sage Metallic, Blackberry Metallic and Sandstone as new exterior colors.

A Cabin Built Around One Continuous Loop

Inside, a single architectural loop unifies the dashboard, paired with soft-touch surfaces and standard gray wood trim. Buyers choose between pebble grey, black or medium brown color schemes, with a 10-color ambient lighting system standard and 30-color lighting on the top two trims. Leatherette remains standard on entry models, while the top trims move up to Varenna and then Nappa leather. Front seats gain 4-way lumbar support across the lineup, with thigh support and massage functions reserved for upper trims.

A More Powerful Engine Under the Hood

Power comes from an updated evo5 version of the EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, now making 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque — a 13-hp jump over the outgoing engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, with 4Motion all-wheel drive available across the range. A hybrid variant is planned for the midcycle refresh, though no timeline was given.

Everyday Practicality Stays Intact

Built on the upgraded MQB Evo architecture, the Cross Sport keeps its generous trunk space and rear-seat legroom, and towing capacity holds at 5,000 pounds with a factory-installed hitch. New standard equipment includes a power liftgate with Easy Open, rear sunshades and front/rear Park Distance Control.

The Atlas Cross Sport continues to target couples and empty nesters who want a design-forward five-seater without giving up cargo space, distinguishing it from the practicality-first, seven-seat Atlas. Pricing and full specifications will follow closer to its early-2027 launch.
