Vauxhall brings the hot hatch back into focus
The 2027 Vauxhall Corsa GSE feels like a car built with a point to prove.
For years, small hot hatchbacks were central to Vauxhall’s identity. Nova GTE, Nova GSi, Corsa GSi, and later the Corsa VXR all carried a certain rough-edged charm. Fast enough to feel exciting, compact enough to stay playful. Then the segment slowly faded as emissions rules tightened and buyers shifted toward SUVs.
Now the Corsa GSE brings that formula back, only this time with a fully electric drivetrain underneath.
And honestly, it looks properly serious.
The sharper front bumper, enlarged lower intakes, black trim pieces, widened arches, and rear spoiler all push the small hatch into more aggressive territory. The three-spoke 18-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres help too.
Compact proportions still suit the Corsa perfectly
One thing that immediately works in the Corsa GSE’s favour is size.
Modern performance cars often feel oversized and overly complicated, but the Corsa still keeps relatively tight proportions. Short overhangs, a planted stance, and compact dimensions naturally suit the hot hatch formula.
Vauxhall lowers the chassis and adds revised stabilisers, hydraulic dampers, upgraded axles, and a Torsen multi-plate limited-slip differential to sharpen the driving experience further.
That last part matters. Front-wheel-drive electric cars can struggle to feel engaging once the initial acceleration wears off. The mechanical differential suggests Vauxhall actually wants the car to behave like a proper driver-focused hatch rather than just another fast EV.
The four-piston Alcon brakes reinforce that impression.
Interior mixes old-school references with new tech
Inside, the Corsa GSE balances nostalgia and modern EV design surprisingly well.
The performance seats feature integrated headrests along with a black, grey, and yellow chequered pattern that references the original Nova hot hatches from the late 1980s. Bright yellow seatbelts and stitching continue the theme across the cabin.
There’s Alcantara on the steering wheel and door inserts, aluminium pedals, and GSE graphics integrated into the instrument panel.
The digital displays themselves are heavily performance-focused. Drivers can access G-force readings, acceleration data, and battery management information through the 10-inch touchscreen and digital cluster.
Importantly, the cabin still feels usable and familiar rather than experimental.
Electric performance arrives with real pace
The numbers are strong for something this size.
The electric drivetrain produces 281 PS (207 kW) and 345 Nm of torque, enough to push the Corsa GSE from 0-62 mph in 5.5 seconds. Top speed is rated at 112 mph.
Three driving modes are available. Sport unlocks the car’s full performance potential, while Normal reduces output to 231 PS. Eco mode focuses on efficiency and limits top speed to 93 mph.
Power comes from a 54 kWh battery pack with 51 kWh usable capacity. Engineers also revised thermal management systems to maintain consistent performance during harder driving sessions.
That’s an area where some performance EVs still struggle.
A modern VXR successor in everything but name
The Corsa GSE enters a growing segment that includes the MINI John Cooper Works Electric, Alpine A290, and Abarth 600e.
What separates the Vauxhall slightly is its connection to the brand’s own hot hatch history. The references to older Nova and Corsa performance models aren’t subtle, and that’s probably intentional.
The new Vauxhall Corsa GSE will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show later this year.
