Tata Refreshes Its Entry-Level Hatchback

The 2027 Tata Motors Tiago is shaping up to be the most substantial update the hatchback has received since its original debut nearly a decade ago. Tata has released the first teaser footage of both the standard Tiago and the fully electric Tiago.EV, confirming a full reveal on May 28.

While Tata refers to the new model as a next-generation car, the changes appear closer to an extensive redesign of the existing platform rather than an entirely new vehicle. Still, visually, the difference is obvious.

The Tiago first entered the Indian market in 2016 before receiving a facelift in 2020 and smaller revisions in 2025. This latest version pushes the hatchback further away from its budget-car roots with styling details that feel noticeably more European in execution.

Slimmer Lighting And Cleaner Surfaces

The front end receives the most dramatic transformation.

Slimmer headlights, a cleaner grille layout and interconnected lower bumper intakes give the Tiago a wider and more modern appearance than before. The design language now leans closer to compact European hatchbacks, particularly in the way the lighting and bumper graphics have been integrated.

From the side, the overall dimensions remain familiar, though Tata designers have worked carefully around the details. Fresh plastic wheel-arch cladding, additional black trim around the C-pillar and new 15-inch diamond-cut wheels help break up the older silhouette.

The rear section has also been significantly revised. Slimmer full-width taillights stretch across the tailgate while the redesigned bumper now houses the reverse light lower down. The result looks cleaner and slightly more upscale than the outgoing car.

The petrol and electric models remain visually similar. Aside from specific Tiago and Tiago.EV badging, there is little separating the two externally.

Interior Technology Appears To Move Upmarket

Tata has not fully revealed the interior yet, although teaser material and local reports suggest a meaningful technology upgrade is coming.

The existing 10.25-inch infotainment display introduced during the previous update is expected to continue, potentially joined by a digital instrument cluster and redesigned front seats with integrated headrests.

Mirror-mounted cameras visible in the teaser footage also point toward the addition of a 360-degree camera system similar to the one fitted to the updated Tata Punch.

Safety equipment may improve substantially as well. Reports indicate the Tiago could move from dual airbags to a six-airbag standard setup. [Speculation]

Familiar Engines Likely To Continue

Tata has not confirmed detailed powertrain specifications yet.

Current reports suggest the hatchback will retain its naturally aspirated 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 85 hp, while the CNG version is expected to continue with 75 hp.

Pricing will be announced during the official market launch, though the upgraded equipment and revised styling may push the Tiago slightly above the outgoing model’s starting price.

The updated Tiago will continue competing against compact urban hatchbacks such as the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.
