2027 Porsche Taycan GTS Gets New E Shift Experience
The Porsche Taycan has never really struggled for speed. What it sometimes lacked, depending on who you asked, was the sense of interaction that many enthusiasts associate with performance cars. Porsche seems to have been listening.
For the 2027 model year, the company is rolling out a series of updates across the Taycan range, and one of the headline changes is a new feature called E-Shift. It doesn't add gears in the traditional sense, but it does introduce virtual gear changes designed to make the driving experience feel more involving.
A Different Approach to Electric Performance
Electric cars are known for their seamless power delivery. That's part of their appeal, yet it can also make them feel detached compared with a sports car that asks the driver to work through the rev range.
Porsche's answer is E-Shift. Drivers can use steering-wheel paddles to move through eight simulated gears, complete with shift sensations, gear-specific responses and a virtual rev counter displayed in the instrument cluster. The company has also revised its Electric Sport Sound system so the audio character changes according to virtual engine speed and load.
It's an unusual idea on paper. Behind the wheel, Porsche says the aim is to create a stronger connection between driver and car rather than simply adding noise for the sake of it.
Technology Takes a Step Forward
The updates aren't limited to driving dynamics. The Taycan's digital environment has received a substantial refresh, bringing a cleaner layout and a more modern operating experience.
A redesigned Porsche Communication Management system now features customizable widgets and a detailed 3D model of the vehicle displayed in the owner's chosen exterior color. Menus have been simplified, response times are quicker and overall operation feels closer to what drivers expect from modern consumer electronics.
Voice control has also become smarter. The AI-supported Voice Pilot can handle more natural conversations and allows follow-up questions without repeatedly using the wake phrase. That's the kind of feature drivers may appreciate more during daily use than during a short test drive.
More Miles Between Charges
Porsche has also focused on efficiency. New low rolling resistance summer tires are available for selected rear-wheel-drive Taycan models, helping extend driving range.
Combined with the Performance Battery Plus package, Porsche says certain versions can now achieve up to 700 kilometers of WLTP range. That figure represents another step forward for a model that already ranks among the stronger long-distance electric tourers in its segment.
Wireless charging performance has improved too, with charging output increasing to as much as 25 watts. Over-the-air software updates can now be downloaded directly through the infotainment system and installed in the background. Small changes, perhaps, but the sort owners notice over time.
More Character Without Changing the Formula
What's interesting about these updates is that Porsche isn't trying to reinvent the Taycan. The core package remains familiar. Instead, the company is adding layers to an already established formula.
The new E-Shift system, enhanced sound profile and updated digital experience suggest Porsche believes electric performance cars can be engaging in ways that go beyond acceleration figures. Whether drivers embrace virtual shifting remains to be seen, but it certainly gives the 2027 Porsche Taycan GTS a different talking point in an increasingly crowded EV market.
