2027 Nissan Leaf Nismo Gives the EV a Sporting Edge
The Leaf has never been the loudest name in Nissan's performance story. It has always been the sensible electric hatchback people relied on every day. The 2027 Nissan Leaf Nismo doesn't abandon that role, but it does show what happens when the engineers responsible for the company's performance cars get involved.
Based on the third-generation Leaf introduced earlier this year, the Nismo version has now reached Japanese showrooms. Rather than chasing a dramatic jump in output, Nissan has spent its time refining the way the car reacts to driver inputs. It's a different approach, and probably the more useful one for a road car.
The Biggest Changes Sit Underneath
The suspension is where most of the work has happened.
Nismo fits its own springs, stabilizers and suspension bushes, along with swing valve dampers that aim to keep the body flatter without making the ride feel overly firm. Steering response has also been sharpened, helping the Leaf change direction with more confidence on winding roads while remaining comfortable enough for everyday driving.
Grip comes from Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires mounted on lightweight 19-inch Enkei wheels. Nissan says the combination improves stability while making better use of the available traction.
The drive modes have also been revisited. Sport becomes Nismo Mode, with stronger and more linear acceleration, while Standard and Eco receive their own calibration changes. Even the regenerative braking paddles behave differently, giving drivers four revised levels of deceleration depending on how they want the car to respond.
More Than Cosmetic Changes
At first glance, the exterior simply looks lower and a little more aggressive.
Look closer and there is more going on. The front bumper incorporates air guides designed to smooth airflow down the sides of the body. A reshaped rear bumper, an underbody spoiler inspired by a boat hull and a larger ducktail spoiler work together to increase downforce without adding aerodynamic drag.
Red accents have long been part of the Nismo identity, and they return here across the bodywork, mirror caps and trim pieces. Buyers can also order the crossover in Nismo Stealth Gray, a color reserved for the brand's performance models. The result is distinctive without looking excessive.
Small Cabin Changes That Drivers Will Notice
Open the door and the differences continue.
The steering wheel gains TailorFit synthetic leather, red stitching and the familiar red center marker. Nismo logos are stitched into the front seats, while optional RECARO sport seats provide additional support without giving up power adjustment. Red accents appear throughout the dashboard and instrument panel, adding just enough contrast to remind occupants this isn't the standard Leaf.
Same EV, Different Personality
For Japan, Nissan offers several versions of the Leaf Nismo. The flagship B7 models produce 160 kW and 355 Nm, while the B5 variant develops 130 kW and 345 Nm. Prices begin at 6,601,100 yen and rise to 7,227,000 yen for the RECARO-equipped B7 model.
The numbers tell only part of the story, though. Nissan's own announcement spends far more time talking about steering feel, chassis balance and driver confidence than outright acceleration. That says a lot about what the 2027 Nissan Leaf Nismo is trying to be. It isn't intended to replace a dedicated sports car. Instead, it gives an everyday electric crossover a more engaging character without asking owners to give up the practicality that made the Leaf successful in the first place.
