2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS 63 AMG X167

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Updated 4.0-liter V8 biturbo delivers 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.

  • New AMG front-end design includes revised lighting and larger cooling openings.

  • AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL and AMG RIDE CONTROL+ enhance handling and ride comfort.

A Fresh Look For AMG's Largest SUV

Big performance SUVs rarely go unnoticed, and the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS 63 AMG makes sure of that before the engine is even started.

The most obvious changes appear at the front. Mercedes-AMG has redesigned the fascia with a new AMG-specific radiator grille, larger air intakes, and revised LED headlamps featuring an exclusive AMG light signature. The updates don't fundamentally alter the familiar GLS shape, but they give the vehicle a more purposeful appearance.

Viewed from the side, the proportions remain unmistakably GLS. It's still a full-size luxury SUV with three rows of seating and substantial road presence. New wheel options help reinforce that character. Buyers can now choose from several AMG wheel designs, including new 23-inch multi-spoke and five-spoke monoblock designs developed specifically for the GLS 63. At the rear, twin tailpipes and a revised diffuser continue the performance-focused theme.

The V8 Remains The Main Attraction

Open the hood and the story quickly turns to the engine.

Mercedes-AMG has extensively revised its M177 EVO 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, a powerplant that remains central to the brand's performance identity. Although peak output stays at 603 horsepower, engineers introduced a number of changes including a new flat-plane crankshaft, revised intake components, updated fuel injection technology, and improvements to airflow management.

Torque reaches 627 lb-ft and is available across a broad portion of the rev range. Supporting the V8 is a 48-volt mild-hybrid system featuring a new-generation Integrated Starter Generator. The system contributes up to 23 additional horsepower and 151 lb-ft of assistance at lower engine speeds while also supporting energy recuperation and smoother stop-start operation.

Mercedes-AMG estimates a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 174 mph.

Technology Focuses On Control And Comfort

One of the more interesting aspects of the GLS 63 is the way it attempts to balance contradictory roles.

It needs to function as a luxury family SUV, yet also deliver the responsiveness expected from an AMG model. To help achieve that, Mercedes-AMG equips the vehicle with AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension and AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL active roll stabilization.

Sensors continuously monitor vehicle movement and road conditions, allowing the suspension to adapt in real time. The system can reduce body roll during cornering, improve stability, and even support off-road driving through dedicated Trail and Slippery driving programs. Ride height can also be adjusted depending on driving conditions and selected modes.

Luxury Meets Digital Performance

Inside, the GLS 63 maintains its premium focus while introducing the latest version of Mercedes-Benz's digital technology.

The AMG Performance steering wheel remains a centerpiece of the cabin and can be specified in several material combinations including Nappa leather, microfiber, and carbon fiber. The new MB.OS operating system provides high-resolution displays and AMG-specific performance information such as torque distribution, G-forces, and detailed engine data.

Customers also have access to an expanded range of MANUFAKTUR customization options. New paint finishes, unique upholstery choices, carbon-fiber trim, and exclusive interior colors allow owners to tailor the SUV to their preferences.

The result is a vehicle that continues to occupy a unique position in the market. The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS 63 AMG remains a three-row luxury SUV, but one that still places a hand-built V8 and performance engineering at the center of the experience.
