2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE 53 AMG Hybrid W167

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Plug-in hybrid system delivers 585 hp and 750 Nm.

  • Electric-only driving up to 140 km/h with ~90 km range.

  • Updated AMG design, suspension, and digital cockpit.

Same GLE shape, but a bit more intent

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE 53 AMG Hybrid W167 doesn’t try to reinvent the SUV. It works on the details instead.

Up front, the AMG grille is more pronounced, sitting alongside reshaped air intakes that give the nose a slightly tighter, more focused look. The lighting signature has been revised too, though it’s something you notice more at night than in daylight. Around the back, the taillights pick up a new internal pattern, while the twin exhaust outlets remain unchanged — still one of the easier ways to tell it apart.

There’s also a wider mix of finishes this time around, including a matte silver tone that leans more technical than flashy.

Proportions stay familiar, stance feels more settled

It’s still clearly a GLE. The dimensions don’t shift, and the overall shape remains what you’d expect from this generation.

What does change is how it sits. The combination of larger wheel options — up to 22 inches — and revised suspension tuning gives it a slightly more grounded look. Not dramatic, but noticeable when you see it in profile.

Underneath, the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ system continues to handle torque distribution. It’s fully variable, which means the car can shift power where it’s needed rather than sticking to a fixed split.

Cabin keeps its layout, adds refinement

Inside, the layout doesn’t take any risks. It sticks with what’s already familiar, but there are small changes that add up.

Material choices lean toward performance-focused finishes. Nappa leather, microfiber surfaces, and AMG-specific trim pieces are available depending on how the car is configured.

The steering wheel brings back physical controls, which feels like a response to how people actually use these systems. Behind it, the digital interface includes AMG-specific displays, with performance data always in view.

It’s not a completely new cabin. More like a careful update.

Hybrid system changes how it delivers power

The biggest shift is under the hood.

The GLE 53 now combines a 3.0-liter inline-six with an electric motor, producing a total of 585 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque.

On paper, that translates to a 0–100 km/h time of about 4.5 seconds. In practice, the electric motor makes the difference early on. There’s no waiting for boost to build. The response is immediate, and the engine picks up from there.

It also changes how the car can be used day to day. The SUV can run in electric mode at speeds up to 140 km/h, with a range that sits around 90 kilometers depending on conditions.

Charging options include standard AC and an available DC fast charger, which can bring the battery up from low levels fairly quickly.

Suspension setup leans toward balance

Mercedes-AMG hasn’t pushed the GLE 53 too far in one direction. The suspension setup reflects that.

The air suspension adapts continuously, shifting between comfort and a firmer setup depending on how it’s driven. There’s also an optional active roll stabilization system, which reduces body movement through corners without making the ride feel overly stiff.

Drive modes still play a big role. Comfort, Sport, Sport+, along with hybrid-specific settings, all change how the car responds.

Sitting in the middle, as expected

The GLE 53 AMG Hybrid doesn’t aim to be the most aggressive option in the lineup. It sits somewhere in the middle.

That’s where it’s always been. Enough performance to feel quick, enough comfort to use every day.

The hybrid system doesn’t change that balance. It just shifts how the performance is delivered.
