2025 Mercedes-Benz GLE 53 AMG Edition R W167

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six turbo with 48-volt mild-hybrid system, the GLE 53 AMG Edition R produces 429 hp and 413 lb-ft torque.

  • Standard AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, 9-speed automatic, and air suspension bring a blend of pace and control.

  • Dual 12.3-inch displays, AMG sport interior, Burmester audio and advanced driver assistance systems round out the feature set.

Exterior design: muscular, unmistakably AMG

The Edition R version of the GLE 53 doesn’t reinvent the shape but it does refine it. The AMG grille with vertical slats sets the tone, flanked by LED headlamps and big air intakes that leave little doubt about the intent. Proportions remain confident: a length of just over 194 inches, a wide 84.9-inch stance with mirrors included, and a 117.9-inch wheelbase.

The SUV rides on 21-inch AMG twin 5-spoke alloys as standard, with fender arches and side sculpting adding visual weight. Chrome and gloss black detailing underline the premium position. At more than 5,200 pounds, it’s a sizeable machine, but AMG tweaks to suspension and chassis ensure it never feels clumsy.

Powertrain and performance: numbers that matter

The heart of the GLE 53 AMG Edition R is the 3.0-liter inline-six with a turbocharger backed by Mercedes’ 48-volt EQ Boost system. Output is rated at 429 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 413 lb-ft of torque available across a wide rev band. On paper that translates to 0–60 mph in around 4.9 seconds, which is impressive given its size and weight.

Power is channelled through the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 9-speed automatic and distributed via AMG’s fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. Adaptive air suspension (AMG RIDE CONTROL+) comes standard, with drive modes accessible through AMG Dynamic Select. Fuel economy sits in line with expectations for the class: EPA estimates are around 18 mpg city, 22 highway, 20 combined, with towing capacity up to 7,700 lbs when properly equipped.

It’s not just about numbers, though. The six-cylinder is smooth, responsive and paired with the hybrid system for quicker launches and stronger mid-range punch. For many buyers, that balance of pace and civility is the AMG sweet spot.

Cabin: technology meets comfort

Inside, the Edition R makes sure you know you’re in something more than an ordinary GLE. The AMG sport seats, upholstered in leather or MB-Tex/DINAMICA with contrast stitching, strike a balance between support and comfort. The AMG performance steering wheel feels suitably chunky, and branded details remind you this is more than a trim line.

The technology suite is anchored by dual 12.3-inch displays. One sits ahead of the driver as a configurable instrument cluster, the other serves as a central touchscreen for Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system. Voice control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, and performance telemetry are all included.

Safety and driver assistance

Mercedes continues to load its AMG SUVs with comprehensive safety systems. Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Crosswind Assist, and lane-keeping systems are all fitted. Buyers can add further layers, such as DISTRONIC adaptive cruise, through option packages.

These features don’t detract from the driving experience — instead they support it, especially when long journeys or daily traffic are involved.

In the U.S., the 2025 GLE 53 AMG SUV starts around $89,200, with Edition R commanding more depending on equipment. That price places it among rivals like the BMW X5 M50i, Audi SQ8, and Porsche Cayenne.
