A Familiar Name Returns To The Lineup
Some trim names carry more weight than others. Within the Grand Cherokee family, Trailhawk has always been one of them.
After sitting out recent updates, the Trailhawk returns for 2027 as the most off-road-focused version of Jeep's flagship SUV. The idea behind it hasn't really changed. It still aims to be the Grand Cherokee for people who spend weekends looking for dirt roads, rocky trails, and places where pavement disappears.
This latest version arrives shortly after the refreshed Grand Cherokee lineup and immediately reclaims its place at the rugged end of the range.
Designed With Capability In Mind
The differences become obvious before the vehicle even moves.
The front fascia has been reshaped to improve approach angles, a change that serves a purpose beyond appearance. Bright red tow hooks stand out against the darker exterior trim and instantly identify the Trailhawk as something different from the standard Grand Cherokee.
A matte-black hood decal with red Trailhawk lettering reduces glare for the driver while adding another visual cue. Along the sides, 30.5-inch Goodyear Territory All-Terrain tires wrap around 18-inch Granite Crystal wheels, giving the SUV a more purposeful stance. Dark neutral metallic accents complete the exterior treatment.
It's a design that looks ready for the trail because, quite simply, that's exactly what it was built for.
New Turbo Power Under The Hood
One of the biggest changes for 2027 sits beneath the hood.
The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk now uses Jeep's new 2.0-liter Hurricane 4 Turbo engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Output reaches 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, giving the SUV stronger performance than previous gasoline-powered Trailhawk models.
Peak torque arrives at 3,000 rpm, which is particularly useful in low-speed situations where precise throttle control matters. Jeep also notes that the engine uses Turbulent Jet Ignition technology, helping it achieve an output of 162 horsepower per liter.
Hardware Built For Difficult Terrain
The engine is only part of the story.
Trailhawk comes equipped with the Quadra-Trac II four-wheel-drive system, a two-speed transfer case, Selec-Terrain traction management with Rock mode, and a rear electronic limited-slip differential. Quadra-Lift air suspension and electronic semi-active damping help the vehicle adapt to changing terrain.
Six steel skid plates protect critical components underneath, while the integrated TrailCam system gives drivers a better view of obstacles ahead. Jeep's Off-Road Pages provide real-time information on suspension settings, pitch and roll angles, and drivetrain status.
The result is impressive capability. Jeep claims best-in-class ground clearance of 11.4 inches, along with best-in-class approach, breakover, and departure angles of 36, 24.4, and 30.3 degrees respectively. The Trailhawk also maintains a best-in-class towing capacity of 6,200 pounds when equipped with the standard Trailer Tow Package.
Staying True To The Trailhawk Formula
What stands out most about the 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is how little it compromises.
The cabin features Global Black Nappa leather seating, red contrast stitching, and a 12.3-inch infotainment display, giving it the comfort expected from a modern SUV. Yet underneath, it remains engineered for the kind of terrain that made the Trailhawk badge popular in the first place.
For buyers who felt the Grand Cherokee lineup needed a more serious off-road option again, the Trailhawk's return will likely be welcome news.
