2027 Chery Automobiles Stockman

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Chery has officially named its upcoming ute Stockman after a nationwide competition.

  • More than 20,000 submissions and over 12,000 public votes helped decide the winning name.

  • The 2027 Chery Stockman will become Australia's first diesel plug in hybrid ute.

Australians Choose the Name for Chery's First Ute

The 2027 Chery Stockman now has more than a launch plan. It finally has a name chosen by the people expected to drive it.

Rather than selecting a badge behind closed doors, Chery Australia invited the public to take part in naming its first ute. The response was significant. More than 20,000 entries arrived from around the country before the list was narrowed to eight finalists. Public voting followed, and Stockman emerged as the clear winner.

The winning entry came from Victorian Steve Kodikara, whose submission connected the vehicle with Australia's long history of stockmen working across some of the country's toughest landscapes. His prize is fitting. He will receive the first Stockman when deliveries begin later this year.

A Name Inspired by Australian Heritage

The choice of Stockman reflects more than tradition. Chery says it wanted a name that represented endurance, reliability and versatility, qualities it believes match the character of its first ute.

Steve Kodikara described Australia's stockmen as the nation's original workhorses, people who earned trust by crossing difficult terrain and getting the job done regardless of conditions. Chery felt those values aligned naturally with its upcoming pickup, particularly as it combines conventional diesel capability with newer electrified technology.

Public Voting Decided the Winner

The competition attracted entries from motorists, tradies, families and ute enthusiasts across Australia.

After the shortlist was announced, more than 12,000 Australians voted, with Stockman collecting over 25 percent of all votes cast. Other shortlisted names included Outrider, Orca, Ironbark, Bushwalker, Longreach, Ridgeback, Terra and Mate.

Lucas Harris, Chief Operating Officer of Chery Australia, said the response exceeded expectations and showed how engaged Australian buyers are with the ute segment. He added that Stockman stood out because it combined Australian identity with the capability and innovation planned for the new model.

Diesel Plug In Hybrid Headlines the New Model

While Chery has yet to release technical specifications, the company has confirmed the 2027 Chery Stockman will be Australia's first diesel plug in hybrid ute. The combination of a diesel engine and plug in hybrid system is expected to distinguish it from traditional diesel rivals when it reaches local showrooms. Pricing, full specifications and launch timing will be announced closer to its Australian introduction.

For now, the announcement is less about power figures and more about identity. Before buyers learn how much it can tow or how far it can travel, the new ute has already established a distinctly Australian name chosen by Australians themselves.
