2026 Chery Automobiles KP31 Concept

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • World-first diesel PHEV in the dual-cab ute segment.

  • 2.5-litre turbo diesel with 47% thermal efficiency and 10% better fuel efficiency.

  • 1000kg payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity confirmed.

Diesel Plug In Hybrid Powertrain

The 2026 Chery KP31 Concept has made its first international appearance, previewing a production dual-cab ute due in showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Its headline claim is clear. Chery positions the KP31 as the world’s first ute to feature a plug-in hybrid diesel system. At the centre is a 2.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine, rated at 47% thermal efficiency. According to the brand, this makes it 10% more fuel efficient than the average diesel powertrain.

Precise system output figures have not yet been disclosed [Unverified], but the intent is evident. By pairing diesel combustion with plug-in hybrid capability, Chery aims to combine long-distance efficiency with electrified assistance, targeting buyers who require towing and payload capacity without sacrificing consumption figures.

Noise, vibration and harshness have also been addressed. The production version is expected to deliver a 30% reduction in vibration compared with the average diesel powertrain.

In a segment traditionally defined by conventional turbo-diesel engines, the KP31’s hybrid diesel configuration signals a technical shift rather than incremental tuning.

Payload and Towing Credentials

Chery confirms a 1000kg payload and a 3.5-tonne towing capacity for the production vehicle.

Those figures place the 2026 Chery KP31 Concept squarely within the expectations of Australia’s dual-cab market, where capability remains a primary purchase driver.

Dimensionally, the concept measures 5610mm in length, 1920mm in width and 1925mm in height. The production model will be slightly shorter at 5450mm overall.

The stance is long and upright, with a substantial footprint that aligns with established rivals in the segment.

Exterior Design and Concept Specification

Visually, the KP31 Concept leans heavily into utility cues. Large Chery lettering spans both the front and rear. A snorkel rises along the A-pillar, reinforcing its off-road intent. Chunky 285/70 R17 all-terrain tyres sit beneath squared wheel arches, and a tub rack carries 4x4 recovery tracks. The finish is matte grey, lending the vehicle a restrained, industrial character.

The proportions are conventional for a dual-cab ute. High bonnet line. Tall cabin. Defined shoulder surfaces. There is little ornamentation. The focus remains on presence and practicality rather than overt styling flourishes.

A petrol plug-in hybrid powertrain is scheduled to join the range in 2027, broadening the electrified offering.
