2027 BMW X5 Long Wheelbase G65

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • The new China specific BMW X5 uses a 3,165 mm wheelbase with a more spacious rear cabin.

  • Its upgraded 3.0T inline six produces 294 kW and 580 Nm, with 0 to 100 km/h taking 5.3 seconds.

  • The range will include combustion and fully electric versions, with the BMW iX5 rated at more than 1,000 km CLTC range.

The 2026 BMW X5 Long Wheelbase G65 marks a substantial change for the locally produced SUV in China. BMW has combined the familiar long wheelbase formula with Neue Klasse design and digital technology, while retaining a six cylinder combustion option alongside a new fully electric iX5.

According to the press release shown on page one, the new X5 will be offered exclusively to Chinese customers from 2027. Production remains localized, while the vehicle itself has been developed around requirements specific to the Chinese market.

Neue Klasse Influence Changes the X5 Shape

The exterior moves toward BMW's Neue Klasse design language. Large uninterrupted surfaces replace some of the visual complexity of the current X5, while the body retains a strong vertical orientation.

A sculpted hood, sharply defined wheel arches and a wide rear contribute to the heavier stance. BMW has also integrated the daytime running lights and low beam headlights into a single element for the first time on the X5. Customers can choose diagonal or double X light signatures.

Eight exterior colors are planned, including Tanzanite Blue Metallic. Cape Town Bronze and Frozen Eucalyptus Green are exclusive to China.

Longer Wheelbase Puts Rear Passengers First

The 3,165 mm wheelbase is one of the defining features of the Chinese X5. BMW says it provides additional cabin space and a more relaxed seating position, particularly in the rear.

New comfort seats are fitted front and back. Rear passengers receive dual electrically operated calf rests and a new BMW Theatre Screen, shifting part of the X5's emphasis toward chauffeured travel.

Natural slate also appears in a BMW production model for the first time, accompanied by crystal glass elements and an illuminated wraparound interior strip.

Neue Klasse Screens Move Into the Cabin

Digital hardware follows BMW's newer interface strategy. The cockpit combines BMW Panoramic iDrive with Panoramic Vision, a free cut Central Display and BMW 3D Head Up Display.

A Passenger Screen is available in the X5 for the first time. BMW also describes an AI driven interaction and entertainment system developed specifically for China.

Six Cylinder Power Gets More Torque

The combustion version retains a 3.0T inline six cylinder engine, but output increases by five percent to 294 kW. Peak torque rises 11.5 percent to 580 Nm. BMW quotes 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds for the long wheelbase X5.

Chassis changes include upgraded xDrive, wider tracks and rear tires measuring up to 315 mm across. BMW Intelligent Driving Assistance has also been co developed with Momenta for Chinese driving conditions.

The electric BMW iX5 uses Gen6 cylindrical battery technology and is claimed to exceed 1,000 km on China's CLTC cycle. Battery capacity, charging speed and motor output are not specified in the supplied release and remain [Unverified].

With both combustion and electric versions planned, the new long wheelbase X5 is being positioned less as a simple stretched derivative and more as a China specific interpretation of BMW's next generation SUV technology.
