One of BMW M's last holdouts finally changes

For years, the BMW M2 stood apart from the rest of the M lineup.

While larger models gradually adopted M xDrive all-wheel drive, the smallest M coupe stayed loyal to a simpler formula. Rear-wheel drive, a straight-six engine, and a compact footprint remained central to its appeal. That changes with the arrival of the 2027 BMW M2 with M xDrive.

BMW insists the character hasn't been diluted. Looking through the technical details, it's easy to understand why the company is making that argument.

The system has been engineered to behave like a rear-wheel-drive car for as long as possible, only bringing the front axle into play when additional traction is required. In normal driving, power is directed exclusively to the rear wheels.


Familiar proportions, broader capability

Visually, little separates the M xDrive version from the standard M2.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. The current G87 generation already has one of the most recognizable silhouettes in BMW's lineup, with its short wheelbase, muscular fenders, and upright stance giving it a distinctly compact performance-car presence.

BMW has chosen to focus attention elsewhere.

The biggest story is what happens underneath the bodywork. An electronically controlled multi-plate clutch continuously manages torque distribution between the front and rear axles, while the Active M Differential controls power delivery across the rear wheels. Together, they are designed to improve traction, stability, and corner-exit performance without sacrificing the rear-driven feel enthusiasts expect.

Interestingly, drivers can still select a dedicated 2WD mode with stability control disabled, allowing the M2 to operate purely as a rear-wheel-drive machine.


More grip means faster numbers

The engine itself remains familiar.

BMW's turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six continues to produce 480 horsepower, paired exclusively with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. What changes is how effectively that power reaches the pavement.

The result is measurable.

BMW claims the M2 with M xDrive reaches 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, three-tenths quicker than the rear-wheel-drive version. The sprint to 200 km/h takes 12.8 seconds, while top speed increases to 285 km/h when equipped with the optional M Driver's Package.

Those improvements might seem modest on paper, but they suggest a car that can deploy its performance more consistently in real-world conditions.


Racing technology arrives on the road

One detail buried in BMW's announcement may prove just as significant as the all-wheel-drive system.

The M2 introduces BMW M Ignite technology, a new pre-chamber combustion process derived from racing applications. BMW says the system reduces fuel consumption under sustained heavy loads while maintaining the sharp throttle response and linear power delivery expected from an M engine. The technology will gradually spread across BMW M's straight-six range beginning in mid-2026.

For drivers who regularly attend track days, the benefits could be particularly noticeable, allowing longer sessions without increasing fuel usage.


Expanding the M2's audience

The arrival of M xDrive feels less like a replacement for the traditional M2 and more like an expansion of the formula.

Purists can still choose rear-wheel drive. Those living in colder climates or seeking maximum acceleration now have another option. BMW appears to have recognized that performance cars increasingly need to excel in more situations than a dry summer road.

The new M2 with M xDrive is the result. A compact coupe that retains its rear-driven roots while gaining the confidence and capability that all-wheel drive can provide.
