2027 BMW i3 First Edition Opens Early Orders
BMW's Neue Klasse era is beginning to take shape.
Just a few months after revealing the production version of the new i3, BMW has opened early order books for the 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition. While the company describes it as a launch model, the car also serves as an early look at what will become one of BMW's most important electric vehicles over the next decade.
That's because the new i3 isn't simply another battery-powered sedan. It represents BMW's second Neue Klasse production model and introduces a collection of technologies that will eventually spread across much of the brand's future lineup.
A New Interpretation Of The 3 Series Formula
Although it carries the i3 name, the car effectively occupies the role traditionally associated with the BMW 3 Series.
The design follows the Neue Klasse philosophy, stripping away visual complexity while retaining familiar BMW proportions. A long wheelbase, short overhangs and a cabin pushed rearward create a silhouette that still feels instantly recognizable as a sports sedan.
At the front, BMW's traditional kidney grille and twin-headlight arrangement have been reimagined as a single integrated lighting element. The rear adopts a new interpretation of BMW's L-shaped lighting signature, while pronounced wheel arches help give the car a broader stance.
Rather than looking futuristic for the sake of it, the i3 appears focused on creating a cleaner and more modern version of a familiar formula.
The Cabin Is Unlike Any Previous BMW
Step inside and the biggest changes become obvious.
The dashboard is dominated by BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects information across the lower section of the windscreen rather than concentrating everything within a traditional instrument cluster. Combined with BMW Operating System X, the setup forms the foundation of the new Panoramic iDrive interface.
Voice control also plays a larger role than before. BMW says large language model technology enables more natural conversations with the Intelligent Personal Assistant, allowing drivers to interact with navigation, vehicle settings, and media functions in a more conversational way.
First Edition models add several premium features as standard, including electrically adjustable multifunction seats, a Harman Kardon audio system, three-zone climate control, and BMW's new 3D Head-Up Display.
Sixth Generation EV Technology Takes Center Stage
Underneath the bodywork sits BMW's latest electric architecture.
The i3 50 xDrive uses two electric motors, one on each axle, producing a combined 469 hp and 645 Nm of torque. BMW quotes a 0-62 mph time of 4.7 seconds, placing the car firmly within performance sedan territory.
More significant than outright acceleration is the technology surrounding the drivetrain. BMW's new Heart of Joy control computer manages vehicle dynamics and responds substantially faster than previous systems. The company has also introduced a Soft Stop function designed to make low-speed stopping smoother and more natural.
A new 108.7-kWh battery forms a structural part of the vehicle and supports 800-volt charging technology. Connected to a 400-kW DC charger, BMW says up to 263 miles of range can be added in just ten minutes. First Edition models offer a claimed WLTP range of up to 563 miles.
BMW's Most Important Electric Sedan Yet
The 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition is more than a launch edition with extra equipment. It serves as an introduction to BMW's next-generation platform, software, charging technology, and design philosophy.
For a company whose reputation was largely built on sports sedans, the new i3 may prove to be one of the most significant models BMW has launched in years.
