New RAV4 Plug in Hybrid delivers 225 kW from Toyota's latest electrified system.
A 25.4 kWh battery provides up to 142 km of electric driving range under test conditions.
South African specification includes fast charging support, premium features, and advanced safety technology.
Toyota's Most Advanced RAV4 Yet
The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug in Hybrid marks a significant step for Toyota's electrified SUV range in South Africa. Sitting at the top of the new RAV4 lineup, the flagship model combines a larger battery, stronger performance and expanded technology while maintaining the practicality that has defined the nameplate for more than three decades.
Toyota describes the new generation as the most connected, most capable and most versatile RAV4 yet. That ambition is visible from the first glance. The latest model adopts a sharper design language with a bold front fascia, hammerhead-inspired styling cues and slim LED lighting signatures that give the SUV a more technical appearance than before.
Stronger Presence and Sharper Details
The side profile remains recognisably RAV4. Upright proportions, pronounced wheel arches and strong shoulder lines continue to communicate SUV capability, while cleaner surfacing brings a more modern look.
At the rear, a full-width lighting treatment stretches across the tailgate and frames the prominent RAV4 script. The Plug in Hybrid receives exclusive styling elements including black 20-inch alloy wheels and bi-tone exterior paint options paired with a contrasting black roof.
Toyota has also increased cargo capacity by four percent, adding a little more practicality for family use, road trips and outdoor activities.
Electrified Performance Takes Centre Stage
The biggest story sits beneath the bodywork.
The RAV4 Plug in Hybrid combines Toyota's sixth-generation plug in hybrid technology with a new 25.4 kWh lithium-ion battery. Total system output reaches 225 kW, making it the most powerful version of the new South African RAV4 range.
Toyota says the battery operates at 391 volts and can deliver up to 142 kilometres of electric driving range under test conditions. For many owners, that could cover most daily commuting without using the petrol engine at all.
The battery uses a water-cooling system designed to improve durability, charging efficiency and overall performance. Charging flexibility has also been expanded through support for home charging, public AC charging and DC fast charging. An 11 kW onboard charger further reduces charging times.
Digital Cabin Designed Around Everyday Use
Inside, the new RAV4 introduces what Toyota calls a "Digital Island" layout. The cabin centres around a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a large touchscreen interface with enhanced graphics and faster processing capability.
The flagship Plug in Hybrid gains a long list of premium equipment, including a panoramic roof, heated and ventilated seats, memory seats for both driver and passenger, a heated steering wheel and shift-by-wire technology.
Connectivity remains a major focus, with wireless smartphone integration, Toyota Connect services and in-car WiFi functionality included.
Safety and Comfort Lead the Package
The RAV4 Plug in Hybrid is also the first Toyota in South Africa to feature Toyota Safety Sense 4.0. The system introduces a broader range of driver assistance technologies, including a Driver Monitor System, Road Sign Assist, Emergency Steering Assist and Intersection Collision Avoidance functionality.
Built on an enhanced TNGA-K platform with increased body rigidity, the new RAV4 aims to deliver greater comfort, improved refinement and stronger handling responses. The result is an SUV that balances everyday usability with the benefits of advanced electrification.
For South African buyers looking to step into plug in hybrid ownership, the new flagship RAV4 presents Toyota's most comprehensive electrified SUV package to date.
