2026 Toyota GR Sport South African Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • First-ever RAV4 GR-S joins the South African range with chassis and suspension upgrades.

  • Hybrid power delivers 163 kW system output through Toyota’s latest electrified technology.

  • Exclusive styling includes a unique grille, 20-inch wheels, red brake calipers, and GR interior details.

Toyota Gives the RAV4 a Sportier Edge

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 GR-Sport South African Version introduces a different side of the familiar family SUV. While previous RAV4 generations focused largely on practicality and efficiency, the GR-S aims to add a sharper personality without losing the qualities that made the nameplate successful in the first place.

It arrives as part of Toyota South Africa’s completely redesigned RAV4 range, a model line that now includes petrol, hybrid, performance-inspired hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants. The GR-S sits near the top of that hierarchy, aimed at buyers who want something that looks and feels a little more focused behind the wheel.

Gazoo Racing Influence Shows in the Details

Toyota has avoided turning the GR-S into a full performance model, but the visual changes are easy to spot.

The front end gains a dedicated mesh grille design along with unique aerodynamic treatments. Wider gloss-black wheel arch extensions give the SUV a broader appearance, while GR badging and 20-inch alloy wheels separate it from the rest of the range. Red brake calipers provide one of the more noticeable visual cues.

The latest RAV4 itself adopts a tougher look than before. Hammerhead-inspired front styling, slim LED lighting signatures and stronger body surfacing give it a more assertive presence. Around the rear, stretched lighting elements and prominent RAV4 lettering create a cleaner and more modern appearance.

Suspension Changes Go Beyond Cosmetics

The most interesting updates sit underneath the bodywork.

Toyota says the GR-S receives dedicated shock absorbers, revised spring rates and reinforced suspension components. Ride height drops by 15 mm compared with standard versions, helping deliver a lower stance and more direct responses.

Engineers also recalibrated the steering system and added additional front and rear crossmember braces to improve chassis rigidity. The goal was greater precision during cornering and a stronger sense of connection between driver and vehicle.

Those changes build on the latest TNGA-K platform, which Toyota says offers a 9.7 percent increase in body rigidity over the previous generation.

Hybrid Power Remains at the Core

Power comes from Toyota’s latest 2.5-litre hybrid system.

The engine produces 137 kW and 221 Nm on its own, while combined system output reaches 163 kW. Toyota has also introduced a newly developed lithium-ion battery designed to improve power delivery while reducing weight and packaging demands.

The company says revised control strategies help make acceleration smoother and more natural during everyday driving.

Digital Cabin Meets Everyday Practicality

Inside, the GR-S receives sports seats, alloy pedals, red contrast stitching and exclusive trim details. The wider RAV4 range introduces Toyota’s new Digital Island cabin layout, built around a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and large touchscreen displays depending on specification.

Cargo space has increased by four percent compared with the previous generation, ensuring the GR-S retains the practicality expected from a family-oriented SUV.

Priced at R941,800 in South Africa, the RAV4 GR-S positions itself between mainstream hybrid models and the flagship plug-in hybrid, offering a blend of efficiency, distinctive styling and a more engaging driving experience.
