2026 Subaru Outback Australian Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Seventh-generation Outback launches in Australia with redesigned proportions, new LED lighting, upgraded tech and an overhauled cabin.

  • Two revised Boxer engines available: a refined 2.5-litre NA and a 2.4-litre turbo for Wilderness variants.

  • Major updates include a 12.1-inch horizontal touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital cluster, expanded luggage space and enhanced safety systems.

Design and Proportions of the Vehicle

The 2026 Subaru Outback Australian Version enters its seventh generation looking distinctly more like a traditional SUV. The front fascia has been rebuilt with a broader stance, vertically stacked LED headlamps and a more upright profile that amplifies height and width compared to the outgoing model

Surfaces are bolder, and the shoulder line sits higher, giving the car a stronger visual anchor on the road or trail.

From the side, the familiar wagon practicality remains, but the silhouette is more angular and deliberate. Subaru’s decision to increase overall height and widen bodywork is noticeable in press images, especially around the rear quarter where the steeper glass angle enlarges usable cargo space. Updated taillamps stretch wider, lifting the rear visually and complementing the bigger opening—now 50 mm taller for easier loading. Even colour choices are broader, including a new Deep Emerald Pearl finish.

Performance and Powertrain Overview

Australia receives two direct-injection Boxer engine choices. Most variants use a refined 2.5-litre naturally aspirated unit producing 137 kW and 254 Nm, tuned for smoother torque delivery and quieter operation

Wilderness models rely on a more potent 2.4-litre turbocharged engine delivering 194 kW and 382 Nm, marking Subaru’s most powerful SUV to date.

Both engines pair with an updated Lineartronic CVT featuring an 8-speed manual mode and more precise shift control. The all-wheel-drive system evolves too: the latest Active Torque Split logic provides finer traction control on mixed surfaces. Ride quality gains from revised suspension tuning and a further-developed Subaru Global Platform that increases rigidity and reduces vibration.

Key Features and Interior Impression

Inside, Subaru shifts to a cleaner, calmer layout. The new 12.1-inch horizontal infotainment touchscreen—now up to 2.5 times faster—anchors the dash and aligns visually with the 12.3-inch digital cluster positioned ahead of the driver

The cluster offers multiple modes, including Classic, Calm and EyeSight-based displays, while variants with built-in navigation add Map and Projection functions.

Seating has been redesigned from the frame up, offering improved lumbar and pelvis support. Headroom increases in both rows, helped by the taller body. Storage is more thoughtful: enlarged bottle holders fit 1-litre Nalgene-style bottles, roof rails now carry up to 363 kg static load, and the cargo area expands to 530 litres with an easily stowable multi-use cover.

Material quality scales by grade—from synthetic leather to Nappa leather on Touring, and water-repellent hydrophobic synthetic leather on Wilderness. The cabin aims for a “living-room-like” feel while staying durable for family and touring use.

Market Positioning and Segment Context

Subaru positions the 2026 Outback as a more capable, more traditionally SUV-shaped answer to the mixed-surface demands of Australian buyers. Naturally aspirated variants step up to 220 mm of ground clearance, while Wilderness climbs further to 240 mm with enhanced approach, breakover and departure angles for genuine off-road work

Pricing in Australia starts at $48,990 for the base AWD and rises to $62,690 for the Wilderness Apex edition. Every model gains an expanded safety suite including the latest EyeSight system with a wide-angle monocular camera, Emergency Driving Stop System, nine airbags and strengthened body structures.

After three decades in the country, Subaru’s most comprehensive Outback update aims to meet both daily-use expectations and longer-range adventure demands—now with a look and feel closer to a full-size SUV than ever before.
