2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness Australian Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Wilderness becomes the flagship off-road Outback with 240 mm clearance, revised approach angles and an exclusive 2.4-litre turbo engine.

  • Seventh-generation Outback adopts a completely redesigned SUV profile with wider stance, reshaped LED lighting and expanded cabin space.

  • New technology includes a 12.1-inch horizontal touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital cluster, improved EyeSight system and more refined interior comfort.

Design and Proportions of the Vehicle

The 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness takes the seventh-generation redesign and pushes it outward—literally. Subaru’s updated proportions are visible the moment you see the vehicle in profile: a more upright posture, broader surfacing, and LED headlamps that emphasize the increased height and width compared to the outgoing model.

Wilderness alters the core shape with expanded cladding, a unique front bumper and matte black mirrors. Copper-look accents on the roof rails, fog lamp surrounds and rear detailing signal the practical touchpoints where recovery gear or accessories might be mounted. The body sits higher on its suspension, and the taller ground clearance shifts the visual weight upward, giving the vehicle a more assertive stance. Subaru’s own description of Wilderness as “adventure-ready” feels appropriate without exaggeration—its exterior reads as purpose-built rather than styled for effect.

Performance and Powertrain Overview

Wilderness is the only variant in the range powered by the 2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer engine. Output is rated at 194 kW and 382 Nm, making it the most powerful Subaru SUV to date.

The engine’s broad torque band, delivered from low revs, is tuned for confidence on inclines and loose off-road surfaces.

The Lineartronic CVT is updated with a high-torque configuration and a revised final reduction ratio unique to Wilderness, improving low-speed capability and control when surfaces deteriorate. Electronically controlled dampers—exclusive to this trim—integrate with X-Mode to stabilize the body over rutted terrain by reacting to pitch, roll and wheel movement in real time. All-wheel drive remains standard, strengthened further by a refined Active Torque Split system offering more precise distribution across changing surfaces.

Key Features and Interior Impression

Inside, Wilderness gets its own material palette. Hydrophobic synthetic leather seats with an anti-slip embossed finish replace the more traditional trims used on other grades. Yellow-tone accents appear on stitching and key touchpoints, contrasting against the darker interior base.

The cabin installation is built around Subaru’s “Clean Line” design, with calm horizontal forms and simplified surfaces.

Subaru’s new 12.1-inch landscape touchscreen replaces the previous vertical layout, responding faster and offering more customizable widgets. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster sits ahead of the driver with multiple viewing modes. Rugged utility appears throughout: expanded door bottle holders, a taller cargo opening, high-strength ladder-style roof rails with 363 kg static load capacity, and a redesigned cargo cover that stores neatly within the rear trim.

Market Positioning and Segment Context

Subaru positions Wilderness as the most capable Outback ever engineered, intended for buyers who genuinely plan to use its extra clearance, steeper approach angles and chassis upgrades. For Australian conditions—often spanning sealed roads, corrugated tracks, and narrow fire trails—the mechanical changes are more than symbolic. Minimum ground clearance rises to 240 mm, with approach, breakover and departure angles at 20°, 21.2° and 23.6° respectively.

Pricing starts at $59,690 for the Wilderness and $62,690 for the Wilderness Apex edition in Australia, with orders open and first deliveries confirmed for 2026.

Subaru notes that this generation aims to take the model into a more traditionally rugged SUV space while maintaining the wagon-based practicality that has always defined Outback ownership.
