2026 Nissan Qashqai e‐POWER Fuji Sunset Red

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Updated e-POWER system delivers lower fuel use, lower CO₂ output, and quieter operation.

  • Electric motor exclusively drives the wheels, with no need for plug-in charging.

  • Positioned as a transitional alternative for EV-curious buyers not ready to go fully electric.

Milan debut signals a refined e-POWER phase

Nissan has introduced the 2026 Nissan Qashqai e-POWER on the streets of Milan, marking the public rollout of the third evolution of its distinctive hybrid technology. Nearly a decade after Qashqai’s original debut and three years into its European e-POWER lifecycle, this update focuses less on reinvention and more on measured improvement.

The intent is clear. Nissan is doubling down on e-POWER as a bridge between combustion and full electrification, targeting drivers drawn to electric driving characteristics but unwilling to rely on charging infrastructure.

Familiar design with a quiet confidence

Visually, the Qashqai remains recognisable. Its stance is compact and balanced, with crisp surfacing and controlled proportions that avoid unnecessary drama. The bodywork prioritises aerodynamic cleanliness, while the overall silhouette maintains the model’s urban-friendly footprint.

Nothing here signals radical change, and that appears deliberate. The design acts as a steady backdrop for the powertrain beneath, reinforcing Qashqai’s role as a mainstream crossover rather than a statement vehicle.

Electric drive without the plug

At the heart of the 2026 update is the redesigned e-POWER system. As before, the wheels are driven solely by an electric motor. A 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine acts only as a generator, producing electricity that feeds the motor or battery, never mechanically driving the wheels.

The motor, generator, inverter, reducer, and multiplier are all combined into a lighter, more compact design in the new modular 5-in-1 power unit. While the battery capacity stays at 2.1 kWh, the output at the wheels increases to 151 kW. Lower running speeds and less noise under load are the results of improvements in lubrication, turbocharging, and combustion efficiency.

Measurable increases in efficiency and refinement

Nissan certifies a 12% reduction in fuel consumption with WLTP figures as low as 4.5 l/100 km, or 22.2 km per litre.

CO₂ emissions drop to 102 g/km, also down 12 percent, placing Qashqai among the most efficient hybrids in its segment.

Cabin noise is reduced by 5.6 dB compared with the previous generation, bringing real-world driving closer to the experience of a battery electric vehicle. A single tank range of over 1,200 km is quoted under WLTP testing, eliminating range anxiety without changing refuelling habits.

Technology and market positioning

Along with the powertrain, the Qashqai has extended service intervals of 20,000 km, which lowers ownership costs; enhanced connectivity via Google-integrated infotainment; and enhanced driver assistance via updated ProPILOT systems.
