A New Chapter for Nissan’s Core Pickup
Nissan has unveiled the 2026 Navara ST-X, a key model within the next-generation lineup arriving in Australia and New Zealand early next year. Built on a renewed platform and shaped by four decades of local insight, the ST-X sits in the middle of the simplified range — positioned for buyers seeking everyday usability with credible off-road and towing capability. The launch coincides with the Navara’s 40th anniversary in Oceania, adding weight to a model that has consistently been one of the region’s most recognisable one-tonne pickups.
Design Shaped by Nissan’s Heritage
The exterior presents a careful evolution rather than a radical diversion. The trademark V-strut grille returns in a more architectural form, referencing modified Australian utes that Nissan’s global designers examined during development. Vertical C-shaped headlamps lock into the grille structure, sharpening the car’s visual width, while the three-slot motif across the upper fascia nods to the D21 generation. The result is a truck that looks confident and planted, but avoids excessive ornamentation.
Along the sides, the bodywork carries a muscular tone without sacrificing clarity of line. The arches are purposeful but not overstated, and the overall stance feels more resolved than before. On the ST-X, the visual cues sit between the entry grade and the more aggressive PRO-4X — a balanced specification for mixed city, highway, and light-trail use.
An Interior That Prioritises Clarity and Practicality
Inside, the ST-X follows the cleaner, more contemporary direction set by the new Navara cabin. Material choices are more considered, and touchpoints feel closer to those expected in modern SUVs. The central 9-inch infotainment system is now standard across the range, bringing DAB radio, Android Auto, and wireless Apple CarPlay. Wireless charging is also included on ST-X, positioned neatly within the lower part of the dashboard for unobtrusive use. A 7-inch TFT display provides driver information with improved clarity over the outgoing model.
Locally Tuned for Real-World Conditions
The engineering story is a central part of the new Navara’s identity. Premcar once again led the suspension tuning program, covering more than 18,000 km of testing across Outback corrugations, urban routes, and heavily loaded scenarios. Every grade, including the ST-X, receives its own locally calibrated setup. The objective was broad capability rather than extreme off-road bias — a truck that remains composed on broken rural surfaces but still comfortable on daily commutes.
Powertrain and Capability
A single powertrain is offered across the range: a 2.4-litre turbodiesel producing 150 kW and 470 Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is listed at 7.7 L/100 km on the combined cycle. Towing capacity is unchanged at 3,500 kg braked, maintaining the Navara’s long-held role as a work and lifestyle tool. ST-X also gains access to the new “Super 4WD” system, which provides full-time high-range capability, a Torsen limited-slip differential, and terrain-specific drive modes for varied surfaces.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety coverage is extensive, with eight airbags and a full suite of ADAS systems. These include Emergency Lane Assist, Blind-Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Pedal Misapplication mitigation, Front and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and High Beam Assist. Adaptive cruise control is available on ST-X. The collective effect brings the Navara into line with modern passenger-car expectations while retaining the durability demanded in regional markets.
