Updated 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Reaches Australian Showrooms
The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Australian Version has officially landed in dealerships across the country, bringing a series of mechanical and cosmetic updates to Mitsubishi’s popular electrified SUV.
This latest version builds on the existing Outlander platform but introduces a revised plug-in hybrid system, updated suspension tuning and several cabin refinements aimed at improving everyday usability. Mitsubishi’s local engineering team also played a role in shaping how the vehicle drives on Australian roads.
The lineup begins with the five-seat ES grade priced at $58,990, while higher-spec versions climb to the EXCEED TOURER at $74,490.
Exterior Updates Bring a Sharper Look
Visually, the changes are subtle but noticeable. The front and rear bumper sections have been reshaped, aligning the PHEV more closely with the styling updates introduced on the petrol Outlander range.
Lower bumper details have been revised and the rear lighting now features a smoked outer lens with darker internal elements. LED turn signals and reverse lamps are now standard at the rear as well.
Wheel designs have also been updated. Entry models run on 18-inch alloys, while higher grades step up to 20-inch wheels, giving the Outlander a slightly more planted stance.
The overall shape remains familiar. It is still recognizably an Outlander, with its upright proportions and broad shoulder line emphasizing practicality over dramatic styling.
Interior Changes Focus on Comfort and Technology
Inside, the revisions are more noticeable.
The center console has been redesigned, moving the cup holders and expanding the storage area under the armrest by roughly 45 percent. Small changes, but the sort that owners notice during everyday driving.
Seat comfort has also been addressed. The second row receives revised padding and a longer seatback for better support, while higher trim levels introduce additional luxury touches such as ventilated front seats and heated rear seats.
Material quality has been improved as well, with stitched trim surfaces and touch-sensitive LED interior lighting appearing across the cabin.
Audio technology comes from Yamaha, with the flagship Dynamic Sound Yamaha Ultimate system delivering up to 1,650 watts of output through a multi-speaker setup.
Larger Battery and Improved Plug-In Hybrid System
The biggest changes sit under the bodywork.
The updated Outlander PHEV now uses a 22.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, paired with two electric motors and a 2.4-litre petrol engine that can operate as either a generator or direct drive unit depending on conditions.
Pure electric driving range rises to 86 km under WLTP testing, with a 103 km range under NEDC standards. Both figures represent improvements over the previous model.
Total system output climbs to 221 kW, giving the SUV stronger acceleration while also improving efficiency. Combined fuel consumption falls to 1.2 L/100 km under NEDC testing.
Drivers can choose between several EV drive modes including EV Priority, Save and Charge, depending on whether they want to preserve battery energy or maximize electric driving.
Suspension Tuned for Australian Roads
Another important change comes from local chassis development.
Mitsubishi recalibrated the front and rear dampers, adjusted the anti-roll bar, and revised electric power steering mapping to suit Australian road conditions.
Additional structural updates, including a steel bonnet and front fenders, help improve cabin noise insulation while new Bridgestone tyres aim to sharpen on-road refinement.
Market Position in the Electrified SUV Segment
The Outlander PHEV has long been one of the most recognizable plug-in hybrid SUVs in Australia. With this update, Mitsubishi appears focused on strengthening the same formula rather than reinventing it.
More electric range. Slightly sharper dynamics. A quieter, more refined cabin.
For buyers who want electric commuting during the week and petrol-assisted range on longer trips, the updated Outlander continues to sit comfortably in the middle of that space.
