A Partnership With British Design Origins

The most recent phase of one of Britain's most charming partnerships has begun. At the Japan Mobility Show, the 2026 MINI Cooper Convertible Paul Smith Collection made its global debut, bringing together two symbols of British innovation under one distinctively contemporary roof.

After the minimalist MINI STRIP in 2021 and the retro-inspired MINI Recharged electric conversion in 2022, this is the third significant partnership between MINI and Sir Paul Smith. Both projects explored sustainability and reinterpretation. This one, however, celebrates continuity — craftsmanship, humor, and the shared optimism that defines both brands.

Design: Classic with a Twist

The 2026 edition carries Smith’s “classic with a twist” philosophy into MINI’s modern design era. It will be offered across the Cooper 3-door, 5-door, and Convertible models, excluding the John Cooper Works line.

Buyers can choose from three distinct paint finishes — Statement Grey, Inspired White, and Midnight Black Metallic — each chosen to reinterpret MINI’s heritage tones. Accents in Nottingham Green nod to Paul Smith’s hometown and appear across the side mirrors, grille, wheel hub covers, and as one of two roof options.

The second roof option, reserved for the Convertible, features striped Jet Black panels in varying matte and gloss textures. Other details — including 18-inch Night Spoke alloy wheels and a two-tone Black Blue MINI emblem — emphasize depth and restraint rather than excess.

The familiar “Signature Stripe,” a motif synonymous with Paul Smith, appears subtly on the roof or rear deck, while Smith’s script is engraved along the tailgate handle. It’s confident but never loud, much like the designer himself.

Interior: Playful British Minimalism

The dashboard and door panels use a knitted black surface inspired by the designer’s tonal stripe fabrics, while the Nightshade Blue sports seats combine Vescin upholstery with knitted inserts in the shoulders and headrests.

A hand-drawn rabbit graphic — a small Paul Smith signature — appears on the floor mats. Colorful stitching across the steering wheel adds another quiet nod to the designer’s sense of humor.

Even the lighting joins the story: when the doors open, a projection reading “Hello” greets the driver, while the door sills carry the phrase “Every day is a new beginning.” In Personal Mode, the central round display offers three exclusive Paul Smith digital backgrounds, extending the design language into the interface itself.

Bridging Heritage and Modernity

Beyond design, this collaboration speaks to a shared cultural lineage. Paul Smith first customized a Mini in 1998, painting it in his signature blue with anthracite wheels. That car — like this one — captured the collision of tradition and individuality that defines British design.

Now, 27 years later, the 2026 MINI Cooper Convertible Paul Smith Collection carries that lineage into MINI’s electrified future, available on both combustion and electric Cooper models.

As MINI’s global head of design Holger Hampf put it, “Every day is a new beginning.” In this case, it’s also a reminder that heritage can be reimagined — one playful detail at a time.
