2026 Mazda CX-5 UK Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • New 2.5-litre mild hybrid replaces previous base engine.

  • Longer wheelbase improves cabin space and practicality.

  • Starts at £31,550 with standard automatic gearbox.

Familiar shape, slightly more presence

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 UK version doesn’t move far from what people already recognise. That’s intentional.

Mazda describes it as “redefining the familiar,” and that shows in the way the design has been handled. The overall silhouette remains close to the outgoing model, but the proportions have shifted.

It’s now longer, wider, and taller, with a wheelbase stretched by 115mm. That gives the car a bit more road presence without pushing it into a different category. The stance feels more planted, especially when viewed from the side.

The Kodo design language is still there. Clean surfaces, controlled lines, nothing overly busy. It’s more evolution than reinvention, but that suits the CX-5’s role in the lineup.

Proportions focused on stability and space

Those dimensional changes aren’t just visual.

The extended wheelbase contributes directly to interior space, particularly for rear passengers. It also helps with stability at speed, something Mazda continues to prioritise.

In terms of footprint, the CX-5 still sits comfortably within the mid-size SUV segment. It’s large enough for family use, but not so big that it becomes difficult to manage in everyday driving.

The balance hasn’t changed. It’s still a car built around usability first, with design following closely behind.

Interior moves toward a cleaner layout

Inside, the updates are more noticeable.

The dashboard has been simplified, with a wider, more open layout that stretches across the cabin. Controls are reduced where possible, with more functions integrated into the central display.

That screen measures 12.9 inches on most models, increasing to 15.6 inches on the Homura grade. For the first time in a Mazda, Google built-in is included, bringing navigation and connected services directly into the system.

A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster sits behind the steering wheel, presenting key information clearly without unnecessary clutter.

Material quality remains a strong point. Depending on trim, there’s a choice of leather or suede-like finishes, with a more refined feel overall.

New engine brings a different driving character

Under the bonnet, there’s a notable change.

The previous 2.0-litre entry-level engine has been replaced by a 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G unit producing 141PS and 238Nm of torque. It’s paired with a 24V mild-hybrid system, aimed at improving efficiency without altering the core driving experience.

Front-wheel-drive models reach 0–62 mph in 10.5 seconds. All-wheel drive is available on higher trims, and every version comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

Mazda has also updated the chassis and suspension setup, focusing on ride comfort and stability rather than outright performance.

It’s a measured change, but one that should be noticeable in everyday driving.

Practicality improves where it matters

The CX-5 has always been a practical SUV, and that continues here.

Boot space increases by 61 litres, making it more usable for family needs. Rear doors now open wider, which helps when loading or fitting child seats.

The rear bench retains a 40:20:40 split, adding flexibility for carrying longer items alongside passengers.

There’s also a towing capacity of up to 2,000 kg, which places it in line with others in this segment.

These aren’t headline changes, but they make a difference over time.
