1985 Legacy Overland Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • 1985 Land Cruiser FJ60 rebuilt with a 6.2-liter GM LS3 V8 and manual transmission.

  • Chassis, suspension, and brakes modernized while preserving original proportions.

  • Handcrafted interior and long-range hardware position it as a grand touring overland build.

A Classic Shape Recast for Distance

The 1985 Legacy Overland Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60, known internally as Project Freedom, starts with one of Toyota’s most enduring silhouettes. The upright glasshouse, slab sides, and near-vertical tailgate remain untouched in spirit. From the outside, this still reads as a proper FJ60, defined by honest proportions rather than embellishment. What has changed is the intent. This is no longer a short-range trail truck. It has been rebuilt as a long-distance overland grand tourer, designed to spend days on the road without fatigue.

Finished in Freeborn Red, a color closely associated with Toyota’s heritage, the body panels were straightened, aligned, and refinished before receiving a ceramic topcoat. The result is crisp without appearing restored for display alone. It looks ready to be used.

Modern Power Beneath Familiar Lines

At the center of the transformation is a 6.2-liter GM LS3 V8 paired with a modern five-speed manual transmission. The integration is comprehensive rather than superficial. Legacy Overland re-engineered mounts, crossmembers, and electronics, recalibrating the ECU so the drivetrain behaves as though it belongs there. The goal is composure rather than spectacle. Power delivery is described as smooth and effortless, particularly at highway speeds, reframing the FJ60 as a capable long-range machine rather than a period-correct crawler.

A long-range 43-gallon fuel tank extends usable distance, reinforcing the build’s touring focus. Cooling, fuel delivery, and electrical systems were fully rebuilt to support sustained operation rather than short excursions.

Chassis Tuned for Control and Comfort

The chassis received equal attention. Old Man Emu springs replace the original suspension components, supported by new bushings, steering hardware, and a rear disc brake conversion. Stainless brake lines and refreshed hydraulics modernize pedal feel without altering the truck’s character. With better control and less fatigue over extended distances, the ride height and stance are still distinctively Land Cruiser.

The thorough rust remediation and refinished undercarriage underneath indicate a build that is intended to last, not just make an impression upon delivery.

Redesigned Interior for a Touring Cabin

Project Freedom most obviously deviates from its utilitarian origins inside. The dashboard, console, door cards, and headliner are all completely retrimmed in two-tone leather and Alcantara. Heated and powered Recaro Orthopaed front seats anchor the space, designed for sustained comfort rather than lateral support alone.

Modern connectivity arrives via a CarPlay-enabled head unit paired with upgraded amplification, speakers, and a discreet subwoofer. Sound insulation, new carpeting, and revised climate hardware shift the experience decisively toward refinement while maintaining the FJ60’s upright driving position.
