2027 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ
By Lorenzo Bianchi October 21, 2025
With a 2.7L gasoline engine and real 4WD, the compact land cruiser FJ makes its debut.
Early Toyota off-road vehicles served as inspiration for the design, which emphasizes proportion and usefulness.
The fourth model in the Land Cruiser family is scheduled to launch in Japan in the middle of 2026.
Unveiled ahead of its mid-2026 Japanese launch, the FJ will sit below the 250 Series as a smaller, more accessible model that still carries the brand’s legendary toughness. Toyota describes it as an expression of “Freedom & Joy” — a phrase that sounds simple, but it captures what this vehicle is about: driving for the sake of it.
Design: Function Dictates the Form
You only need a glance to understand the FJ’s intentions. Its rectangular stance, short overhangs, and raised body instantly recall the original Land Cruisers that earned the model’s reputation decades ago. There’s nothing delicate about it. Everything looks built to survive — from the thick plastic cladding to the segmented bumpers that can be swapped out after a rough trail day.
The front end is pure nostalgia, with round headlights and a simple grille giving it a face that’s familiar but not forced. Even the fenders and door lines feel hand-drawn in their simplicity, proof that Toyota’s designers were more concerned with geometry than gloss. It’s a rare thing now — a modern SUV that isn’t pretending to be anything else.
Practical Cabin and Modern Safety
Inside, the FJ avoids gimmicks. The dashboard runs clean and horizontal, with large knobs, mechanical switches, and durable materials chosen to survive dust, mud, and gloves. Visibility was clearly a priority — the low-set cowl and upright seating give the driver a commanding view.
Despite the simplicity, it still benefits from modern Toyota safety tech. Toyota Safety Sense brings a Pre-Collision Safety System and lane assistance, quietly integrating modern security without cluttering the experience.
Engineered for Tight Trails
Underneath, the FJ rides on a shortened platform with 4,575 mm length and 1,960 mm height, giving it the stance of a serious trail companion. The 2.7-liter 2TR-FE gasoline engine produces 163 PS and 246 Nm, paired with a 6-speed Super ECT automatic and part-time 4WD. It’s not about speed — it’s about torque, reliability, and range.
Toyota’s engineers made sure the turning radius stays tight at 5.5 meters, meaning it can handle narrow trails and city streets with equal confidence. The brand also confirmed ground clearance and suspension travel were tuned for off-road articulation comparable to the 70 Series — that’s a serious benchmark for any small SUV.
For Everyday Adventure
In keeping with Toyota’s outdoor ethos, the FJ’s interior includes MOLLE panels for custom gear mounts, and its cargo area can carry Toyota’s small Land Hopper — a folding electric scooter meant for exploring beyond the trailhead. It’s a clever touch that hints at Toyota’s growing focus on modular adventure mobility.
The FJ is also designed to be easily maintained. The underbody is reinforced, bumpers are sectional, and the engine bay is engineered for accessibility — small details that remind you this isn’t a crossover in disguise.
A Broader Land Cruiser Family
With the new FJ, Toyota’s lineup now spans four clear identities: the flagship 300 Series, the 70 Series workhorse, the 250 Series mid-size modern SUV, and this — the most compact and approachable of them all. Each one speaks to a different kind of owner, but the DNA remains consistent: durability, dependability, and go-anywhere practicality.
