2026 Jaecoo J5 EV
By Lorenzo Bianchi December 15, 2025
In January 2026, Australia will introduce a feature-rich single-track format.
A 155 kW electric motor can go 402 km WLTP and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.
It stands out in the market for small EV SUVs because to its numerous options and pet-friendly cabin.
Visual Personality and Outward Style
The 2026 Jaecoo J5 EV's design deliberately swings toward tough crossover terrain rather than delicate urban flair.
Even though the drivetrain is still front-wheel drive, the stance looks confident and upright in press photos, with short overhangs and a squared-off profile that suggests light off-road intent. At the front, the J5 EV adopts an EV-specific grille with active aerodynamic elements, flanked by slim projector-style LED headlights and pronounced daytime running lights. The surfaces are relatively clean, but the detailing adds definition rather than minimalism. Along the sides, 18-inch aero alloy wheels fill the arches neatly, while a gently sloping roofline avoids the boxy proportions often associated with adventure-styled SUVs.
The rear is anchored by a full-width light bar with Jaecoo lettering integrated across the tailgate. It is a bold signature and one that clearly positions the J5 as a brand-forward product rather than a derivative EV silhouette.
Electric Powertrain and On-Road Performance
Beneath the bodywork, the J5 EV uses a single electric motor producing 155 kW and 288 Nm, driving the front wheels. Performance figures suggest a focus on usable, everyday response rather than outright pace, with a quoted 0–100 km/h time of 7.7 seconds. That puts the J5 comfortably within the realm of mainstream EV expectations.
With an energy consumption rating of 143 Wh/km, the WLTP can travel up to 402 km. The J5 EV can be charged using DC fast charging; under ideal circumstances, a 30–80% recharge can be completed in 28 minutes.Included is vehicle-to-load functionality, which permits, subject to local laws, the direct powering of external devices from the battery.
An uncommon but welcome practical advantage in this class is a maximum non-braked towing capacity of 750 kg.Interior Layout and Pet-Focused Features
Inside, Jaecoo has taken a distinctly lifestyle-oriented approach. A 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster are the focal points of the cabin's simple design. Physical clutter is kept to a minimum, with most vehicle functions integrated into the central display.
What differentiates the J5 EV is its pet-friendly synthetic leather upholstery. Made from a silicone-based material, it is described as antibacterial, wear-resistant and easier to clean than conventional trim. Jaecoo reinforces this positioning with a wide range of accessories, including a dog carrier, waterproof cargo mat and other pet-focused options. Heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic glass roof with powered sunshade, dual-zone climate control and a 50 W wireless charger all come as standard on the Track variant.Jaecoo J5 BEV spec reveal_v2
Positioning in the Market and Safety
With seven airbags and a full range of driver assistance features, such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, emergency lane keeping, and forward collision warning, the safety specification is extensive.
The 2026 Jaecoo J5 EV positions itself as a character-driven substitute for more traditional compact electric SUVs in the Australian EV market. Rather than competing purely on range or performance, it leans into lifestyle usability, distinctive design and ownership reassurance, backed by an eight-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle and battery warranty. It is a pragmatic, personality-led entry into an increasingly crowded segment.
